Mexican Boxing Legend Expects a Knockout From Canelo Alvarez in Dmitry Bivol Fight

On May 7, Canelo Alvarez will go up against the current WBA super light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This will be the 61st fight of Canelo Alvarez’s boxing career. As the entire world prepares itself for Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol’s showdown, Boxing Social catches up with boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera.

During the interaction, the reporter asked Barrera for his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol. Hearing the question, the following is what Barrera told Boxing Social and the fans.

“Great fight, but, you know, Canelo, we’re the Mexican ones. We already know he’s gonna make a huge, huge spectacle from the fight. We can just expect, just expect, wait for a knockout from Canelo,” Barrera told Boxing Social.

Well, Barrera’s words have definitely got the fans worked up. But to know how and if Alvarez would end his bout with Bivol, one would have to tune in on the 7th.

Canelo Alvarez made his debut on October 29, 2005. He was still in his teens when he fought Abraham Gonzalez at Arena Chololo Larios. Alvarez won that fight via TKO and the rest fans know is history. He started winning via KO from his second fight onward. Of his first twenty fights, five Alvarez won via TKO, four by decision, one was a draw, one he won via corner stoppage, and nine by knockouts.

Alvarez, as he heads toward Bivol’s WBA title, now holds a professional record of 57 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws. 39 that is 68% of his wins come via knockout. Some of the big names Canelo Alvarez has gone against and, of course, which tremendously adds to his fighting knowledge are Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, and Floyd Mayweather.

What advantages does Alvarez have against Dmitry Bivol?

Since Marco Antonio Barrera already expects a knockout from Alvarez, one should critically look into the matter and see what are the ways a victory, even if not via KO, is possible. In terms of physicality, Alvarez would fall one inch short of Bivol. Being six feet tall, Bivol would certainly have a reach advantage. However, how much advantage he would enjoy would solely depend on his preparation and approach to Alvarez’s game.

That remains only for height and reach. Apart from that, there are too many variables where Dmitry Bivol might fall significantly short of Alvarez. First thing first, Alvarez has an experience of sixty professional fights and he has fought against various types of fighters. Mayweather, Golovkin, Cotto – these bouts adequately add to Alvarez’s ring IQ and it absolutely stands out. Bivol is not the first fight where Alvarez would be the shorter person inside the ring.

Alvarez is well-seasoned and will come with a game plan. Looking at Dmitry Bivol, he has won his last six fights via UD. Therefore, the gas tank should not be a problem for him. Question is, would Alvarez let the fight go the distance?
