Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond admits he wanted the band’s new album to be called Future Nostalgia – but Dua Lipa got there first.
The Tainted Love hitmakers are back this week with new record Happiness Not Included dropping on Friday, and Marc has revealed he actually had another title in mind before the New Rules singer released her 2020 LP.
Appearing on Monday’s episode of This Morning, he quipped: ‘Dua Lipa actually nicked our album title. When we first started doing this album, we were thinking of a theme – our view of a future from the past.
‘I said, “Oh well a good title would be Future Nostalgia. That’s what we’re gonna call the album!”
‘So we started working on that premise that it was going to be called Future Nostalgia, and then out comes Dua Lipa with an album called Future Nostalgia. It was a major heart-sink moment – but anyway, we just carry on.’
It’s an amazing coincidence, with Dua previously opening up on her own inspiration behind the name, which was a reference to her developing her own sound while paying tribute to her love for 2000s electropop and R&B.

‘I messaged my A&R, “I think I have my album title”. He’s like, “Once you tell me this, and if your heart is set on it, we can’t tell anyone. It’s like a baby name,’ she previously told GQ Magazine before the release.
‘I want it to be the album that young girls look back on the way I look back on Missundaztood by Pink or The Dutchess by Fergie. I want it to be a soundtrack for young girls when they get older. I want it to age well.’

Marc was happy to go with Happiness Not Included as a tongue in cheek title, and the collection features an epic duet with fellow synth pop icons the Pet Shop Boys on new single Purple Zone.
Reflecting on the collaboration, he said: ‘It’s this coming together of, I suppose, the UK’s most influential synth duo with the UK’s most successful synth duo.
‘Both coming together in this – it’s like a cheery on the cake. They gave us the gift, it was just a beautiful thing.’

Meanwhile, Marc also used his This Morning interview to send a message of support to his bandmate David Ball, who is currently hospitalised after injuring his back.
He said: ‘I just wanna say to Dave Ball, wish him all the best ’cause Dave’s in hospital at the moment with a very badly injured back – spinal fracture.
‘Get better very soon, because Dave, I need you to do the American tour in August. Please get better. I think all fans would like to wish him the best.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
