“Just Run Another Dirt Race” – Martin Truex Jr’s Spotter Reflects on Rain Halting Dover Race

Last weekend, the NASCAR Cup race got underway and concluded with Chase Elliott winning. However, it is worth mentioning that the race got halted in the middle of the first stage. This was because the rain decided to play spoilsport and make life difficult for the organizers and drivers. During the wait, Drew Herring, spotter for Martin Truex Jr, offered some solutions to continue racing.

Truex Jr. asked if it was going to rain for a while. Herring replied, “I think our best option’s going to be to clear the horse track. Use those lights, just run another dirt race.”

Soon afterward, the call came that the officials were postponing the race to the following Monday.

What happened to Martin Truex Jr. and his rivals during the second race?

When the race resumed on Monday, there were problems for Austin Cindric, who slid into the wall. Later on, Ryan Blaney tagged the #38 car of Todd Gilliland into a spin. At least he had the decency to admit his own fault and apologize on the team radio. While all that was going on, Denny Hamlin won the opening stage of the race.

There were all sorts of shenanigans in the second stage, with Ryan Blaney winning. In the third stage, Truex Jr and Ross Chastain dueled it out for a very long time. However, on the final lap, the two of them collided, with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver coming off worse.

As a result, Chastain was able to maintain his third place finish, while Truex Jr. plummeted down to 12th place. All in all, it was a disappointing day in the office for the 2017 Cup Series champion. Now, all that he can do is sit and rue what could have been, then try again at the Darlington Raceway this weekend.
