“You Kept Us off the Street”: Kevin Durant’s Special Speech That Left NBA World in Tears Relived

Kevin Durant is one of the greatest scorers the league has ever seen. Not only is he a scorer, but also a former MVP, 2-time champion, and 2-time Finals MVP. His game is diverse considering his height, which sets him apart from other great players. His MVP season is still his best scoring season.

Every year, the MVP delivers a speech. Sometimes people recognize the player’s story, but only some remain in memories. Kevin Durant’s MVP speech is one of the most famous speeches ever.

Kevin Durant and his family had a hard time trying to find a permanent place

Durant won his first MVP award in 2014. He played 81 games in his MVP season, leading his team to the conference finals. Moreover, he averaged 3 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists on 50% shooting from the field. Deserving the MVP award that season, he did not truly credit himself. Durant described his family’s struggles and how his mother did the best she could do for him and his brother.

Kevin talked about the time when his family had to move to different places, trying to find a permanent place to live. It was hard for Durant’s mother to take care of her children, but in the end, her struggles paid off. Kevin’s famous ending words of his speech, “You the real MVP.” had fans in tears.

Kevin continued to play for OKC after his MVP season

Durant played 2 more seasons for the Thunder after winning the MVP. His next 2 seasons were great, but not as good as his MVP season. Durant and the Thunder couldn’t get past the Spurs in the 2014 West Finals. But they came back in 2016 to play the Warriors in the conference finals. They had a 3-1 lead. Just then the splash brothers stepped up and came back to eventually win the series.

Durant had a decent career in OKC, going to the Finals at best where he lost against LeBron‘s Heat. He signed with the Warriors in 2016 and had 2 Finals MVP trophies under his name in the next 2 years. Durant is one of the greats with surreal journeys in the league.
