Bafta TV Awards 2022: Tom Daley and Michelle Keegan have viewers cringing as knitwear exchange goes down ‘like lead balloon’Cydney Yeates
Tom Daley and Michelle Keegan’s awkward exchange on stage at the Bafta TV Awards on Sunday night left viewers cringing.
The Brassic actress and Olympic gold medallist presented an award at the star-studded ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, but their rapport about knitwear fell flat and was met by tumbleweed.
The painful moment began when Michelle expressed disappointment that Tom wasn’t dressed in a knitted outfit.
‘Well how do you know I’ve not got my knit knickers on?’ he replied, pointing at his trousers.
‘Aah OK, there we go!’ Michelle responded. ‘So we now know.’
Tom then went on to add: ‘I can teach you to make some for yourself if you like?’, with Michelle replying ‘ok, Tom!’ as she fanned herself with the gold envelope.

Their banter failed to score any laughs from the crowd, who were so quiet you probably could have heard a pin drop, prompting Tom to quickly press on by announcing the nominees.
The moment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers at home, who branded the whole affair ‘cringe’.

‘An evening of lead balloons but none heavier than that Tom Daley and Michelle Keegan exchange,’ wrote one.
Echoing a similar sentiment, another said: ‘Oooh nobody laughed at Tom Daley’s joke to Michelle Keegan. Cringe.’

Elsewhere at the star-studded ceremony, quizzer Paul Sinha cried on stage in axed scenes that never made it to air.
The quizzer, also known as The Sinnerman, shed a tear as The Chase picked up the best daytime gong.
While he didn’t give a speech, Paul was seen wiping his eyes as one of the producers accepted the accolade, with co-star Anne Hegerty comforting him.
