Gatwa was born in Kigali, Rwanda in 1992, and settled in Scotland in 1994 after his family fled the Rwandan Genocide.
The Gatwa family have lived in both Edinburgh and Dunfermline – though Ncuti eventually headed to Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to study a BA degree in acting.
Upon graduation, he performed as part of the Dundee Repertory Theatre, and then moved to London to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
Gatwa will take the helm from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord and become the first black actor to take on the lead role in the show’s history, after Jodie made history as the first female Doctor.
