‘Something Is Overcompensating’- Emma Raducanu Opens Up on Injury Battles at Italian Open 2022

Emma Raducanu is the current British No.1. She made a turned professional in the year 2018, and just within four years, she entered the top 20 of WTA. Further, she is the only person who shares the record of winning a title in less than 35 game drops with the legend Serena Williams.

Last year was rewarding for Raducanu. She clinched the trophy at the US Open and became the second British woman to win a Grand Slam ever. However, this year up till now has been equally tiring and frustrating for her. The Brit incurred several injuries which hampered her matches. Even so, she has shown great endurance and is planning to do the same in the upcoming Italian Open.

Raducanu failed to give hundred percent in the fourth round of the Madrid Open against Anhelina Kalinina due to a back injury. And now, just a few days after her injury, she is gearing up for the tournament in Rome. Hence attracting question regarding her form and recovery.

While speaking to the press prior to her first match in the clay courts of the Italian Open, she said, “I think it’s just coming from a lot of intensity and overload. My back, I’m managing it. Like it’s fine. But it’s just trying to adapt again to the long matches, to the intensity.” The Brit feels that something must be overcompensating as she added,“I think that all of the small sort of niggles I’m getting, they’re all related and connected to each other. When something is overcompensating, perhaps. Yeah, we’ll see.” 

Raducanu’s Injury ridden year

Raducanu has faced some breathing issues in the fourth round of  Wimbledon Championship’s (2021) . However, she recovered from them pretty quickly and reigned in the US Open. At the very start of the year 2022, she suffered an injury to her hand at Australian Open. Thereafter, in the 3 hour 36 minutes long match of Guadalajara Open against Australian tennis ace Saville. And a hip injury later made her skip Monterrey Open.

Emma made a comeback in the Indian Wells but struggled with a stiff back, which eventually troubled her game and made her face an early exit. Later, she took part in the Miami Open and played till her toe nails came off. Even so, the Brit failed to leave an impact on the tournament. Following that, her back issues resurfaced in the Madrid Open.

Now that the 19-year-old has decided to try her luck in the red dirt of the Italian Open, we hope to see her play some nerve-wracking matches. Raducanu will lock horns with Bianca Andreescu, the Canadian tennis ace and 2019 US Open champion in the first round of the Italian Open on 10th May.
