Jesse Tyler Ferguson reveals Modern Family spin-off plans for Mitch and Cam were scrappedRishma Dosani

Modern Family fans, we have some sad news for you as it looks like a potential spin-off idea has been shelved.

The beloved sitcom ended in 2020 after 11 years on our screens, introducing us to Gloria Delgado-Pritchett (Sofia Vergara), Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) and co as we got a glimpse into their intertwining lives.

It turns out that there was an idea for a spin-off following Mitchell, Cam and Lily (Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons respectively) as they settled into their new Missouri home.

We absolutely would’ve devoured every second of that.

However, appearing on Watch What Happens Live!, Jesse spilled on the sequel series.

‘The ending of the show opened up a potential Mitch and Cam spin-off with their new life in Missouri…,’ host Andy Cohen said. ‘Any discussions for real about that happening?’

‘There were discussions,’ he replied. ‘I think the network decided against it.

‘That’s the first time I ever said that!

‘I think they were just wondering if this was the right family to still tell that story.

‘We’d been on for 11 years, I think they were ready to move in a different direction.’

Jesse was also questioned on the storyline he believed that proved the series had ‘jumped the shark’.

‘We literally went to Hawaii, isn’t that in the Brady Bunch, that’s when they jumped the shark? I don’t think that’s when it happened…,’ he laughed.

‘Did we jump the shark? I don’t know… Maybe when we went to Paris?’

Modern Family ran from 2009 to 2020 and the cast traveled to Paris in episode 13 of the final season.

They jetted to Europe to celebrate Jay (Ed O’Neill) appearing to be gifted a lifetime achievement award for his work in the closet industry – before it emerged that his long-time wardrobe rival had actually set him up.

Cam also hit the streets of France as his clown alter-ego Fizbo as Mitch tried to become more stylish, while Claire had a secret rendezvous with an ex-boyfriend, who ended up becoming best friends with Phil.

While we’re not getting a spin-off any time soon, this might be a good time for a rewatch…
