Aside from the drama, sizzling romance and sun-soaked activities, one of the biggest talking points on Love Island every year is the fashion, as the stars spark clothing trends from inside the villa.

Amid the continued warnings about the detrimental impact fast fashion is having on the environment, it’s been revealed that for the first time on the show, the 2022 contestants will be wearing second-hand clothes.

For the upcoming season, the teaser for which was released just a few days ago, eBay is set to become the ITV programme’s first ever ‘Pre-Loved Fashion Partner’.

So while the islanders will still be putting their best feet forward, dressing to impress at every opportunity in an effort to attract potential matches, this year they’ll be doing so with an eco-conscious frame of mind.

An executive producer of Love Island explained that the show is trying to become ‘more eco-friendly’, and the partnership with eBay means they can do so in front of the camera.

‘We are thrilled to be pairing up with eBay this year as our pre-loved fashion partner. As a show we strive to be a more eco-friendly production with more focus on ways in which we can visibly show this on screen,’ Mike Spencer said.

Mike added how they hope the reality dating series will ‘inspire our demographic’ to follow suit as the competitors use shared wardrobes, by sparking an interest in the ‘incredible finds’ of second-hand clothes that are out there, and by demonstrating ‘how sharing is, in some small way, caring’.

It’s been claimed that when Love Island was on last year, searches for ‘marble dress’ increased by 127% after winner Millie Court was seen wearing one on the show.

Meanwhile, searches for ‘hot pink co-ord’ also surged by 114% after she wore one, demonstrating how influential the clothes worn by the islanders can be.

New data released by eBay found that one in five Brits say they buy more second-hand garments nowadays than they did two years ago, with pre-worn clothes making up 16% of their total wardrobes.

So hopefully this initiative from Love Island will result in even more people jumping onto the environmentally-friendly bandwagon!

Laura Whitmore is set to return as host this year, with her husband Iain Stirling reprising her role once again as the wisecracking, off-screen commentator.

While the contestants might relish in finding pre-loved ensembles to wear, will they be as lucky on their quest for romance?

Love Island returns on Monday June 6 on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
