It’s been three years since new episodes of Stranger Things dropped, and with just over a week until season 4 volume 1 drops on Netflix, the anticipation and fear is rising.

The recently-released trailer teased the significance of Sadie Sink’s role in the new season as Max Mayfield, as the teenager grapples with the grief of losing her brother Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) and perplexing supernatural happenings.

At one point in the teaser, Max is shown levitating above the ground at Billy’s grave, while another shot shows her stumbling upon a creepy-looking grandfather clock that is sure to play an important role in the plot.

As if fans weren’t already concerned about Max’s wellbeing in the new episodes, as well as the threat posed by new villain Vecna, it’s been revealed that the character is going to appear as though she’s had her life ‘almost drained out of her’. Gulp.

During a recent interview, Sadie, 20, opened up about the trajectory of Max’s narrative, explaining that she’s ‘a little bit closer to where she was in season two’, when she ‘had this guard up’ as the new kid in town.

Having ‘relaxed’ a bit in season three and become more ‘fun and comfortable’, by the fourth season, she’s ‘back to her old ways, but on another extreme’.

‘In some ways it feels familiar, but it’s really, it’s just heartbreaking to see. It’s almost like the life has been drained out of her,’ the Fear Street star told IGN.

Meanwhile, Matt Duffer – one half of the Duffer brothers duo who created the show – revealed in a slightly spoilerific remark that Max seeing the grandfather clock is going to have serious repercussions.

‘She shouldn’t have seen that clock, and she saw that clock. It’s not a good sign,’ he teased.

There has been a lot of speculation over the antagonist Vecna, who’s set to make his debut in the new episodes.

With their humanoid form, some have theorised that the creature could actually be Billy, which is why Max is at the centre of the story.

While viewers will have to wait to discover where Vecna came from and why he’s wreaking havoc, Sadie hinted at his motivations.

‘It is interesting just how he chooses his next targets and everything. Everything’s just a lot more personal,’ she said.

Has this added more fuel to the theory of Vecna actually being Billy? Or could it be a red herring?

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 drops on Friday May 27 on Netflix.
