Taylor Swift opened up on difficult periods in her life as she made a speech while being conferred with an honorary doctorate from NYU.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter, 32, received the honorary doctorate in fine arts from New York University this week for her contribution to music throughout her stunning career.

Having shot to fame as a teenager, the former country music star expanded her genre and has gone on to be one of the most successful musicians in the world.

Now Taylor – whose title is now technically Dr – has finally got her cap and gown moment as she was conferred in Yankee Stadium with the class of 2022.

The star, who is usually extremely private, opened up with a candid speech where she gave life advice to those graduating alongside her and spoke about some of the most frustrating moments of her career.

As reported by E! News, Taylor told the gathered crowds her love life had been treated ‘like a spectator sport in which I lose every single game,’ admitting it was ‘not a great way to date’ as a young person.

However, she said, the experience taught her to ‘protect [her] private life fiercely’.

‘Being publicly humiliated over and over again at a young age was excruciatingly painful but it forced me to devalue the ridiculous notion of minute by minute, ever-fluctuating social relevance and likability,’ Taylor said.

She even joked that ‘getting cancelled on the internet and nearly losing my career gave me an excellent knowledge of all the types of wine.’

Taylor advised her fellow graduates that everybody will ‘screw up’ at some point, but they will ‘recover’ and ‘grow more resilient because of it.’

The star had shared her excitement over her conferment with fans ahead of the ceremony on Wednesday, with an Instagram video that told her fans she was ‘wearing a cap and gown for the very first time.’

Taylor added: ‘Last time I was in a stadium this size, I was dancing in heels and wearing a glittery leotard. This outfit is much more comfortable.’

The new Dr Swift poked fun at herself as she accepted her honorary doctorate, telling the crowds she was ‘not the type of doctor you would want around in case of an emergency…’

Unless, that is, ‘ your emergency was that you needed a person who can name over 50 breeds of cats in one minute.’
