Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones has addressed the possibility of the acclaimed BBC drama returning for more seasons after series 2… and she certainly sounds keen.
In the series, Suranne stars as real-life historical figure Anne Lister, who was regarded as ‘the first modern lesbian’ and opened up about her love life in heavily coded diaries, that weren’t deciphered until after her death.
She was married to a woman called Ann Walker, played by Sophie Rundle in the programme, while Ten Percent star Lydia Leonard also stars as Anne’s former flame Marianna Lawton.
Metro.co.uk recently spoke to Suranne at the Sky Up Next event, with the actor expressing her excitement over starring as a female version of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.
With only two episodes left to air for the second series of Gentleman Jack, we asked the star about what the future could hold for the historical drama.
‘We don’t know! We’re just kind of like, it’s in the hands of BBC and HBO so I’m sure there’ll be talks now,’ she said.

However, Suranne added that it appears the demand is certainly there from audiences.
‘I know all the fans really want it, Sally really wants to write it,’ she said, referring to the show’s creator and writer Sally Wainwright.
However, in the end, certain factors need to be taken into account before anything can be confirmed.

‘So as with anything, has there been enough people watching it? Is there enough need for it? I think there is, but yeah… let’s see,’ she stated.
We’re crossing our fingers!
While Gentleman Jack is adored by those who tune in, some may not be aware of where the title of the programme actually comes from.

In real life, the moniker Gentleman Jack was a name that Anne was given by her neighbours, who mocked her sexual orientation and her appearance.
‘Gentleman’ referred to the masculine way in which she dressed, while ‘Jack’ was another word used to refer to a lesbian at that time.

Sally previously opened up about the significance of the title, referring to the title as she said: ‘It was either very vulgar language like that or sensitive posh language like “wintering in Rome”.’
While the title of the drama bears a lot of meaning, it was originally supposed to be called Shibden, after Anne’s estate Shibden Hall.
Gentleman Jack returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
