The next entry in the God Of War franchise may be out as early as September based on retail activity and age rating listings.

At the moment, Sony doesn’t have any first party games with a confirmed release date and the only one that is definitely meant to be out this year is God Of War: Ragnarök, which many fear will end up being delayed.

The developers have insisted that won’t happen but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. The fact that it’s already been rated by the South Korean ratings board does though.

That only ever happens close to release, when the game has already been finished, or close to it, and may even mean it’ll be out in the late summer, rather than the assumed autumn release.

One popular theory is that the game is aiming for a September 30 release date, since that’s the date given for it on the PlayStation database.

That does seem very much like a placeholder date, since it’s the last of the month (although it is a Friday) and the last day of the third quarter of the year.

However, as noted by VGC, the same date is being used by retailer Geeky Zone for a wave of new merchandise, including T-shirts, hoodies, and plush dolls.

The shop could simply be guessing, and following the PlayStation database date, but everything at the moment suggests that the game is definitely coming out this year.

God Of War Ragnarök will almost certainly be featured during Sony’s next State of Play livestream, even though they’ve not announced one yet.

While other companies are preparing preview showcases for roughly the same time as the errant E3 show, Sony had already stopped attending before the pandemic.

Even so, it’d be very surprising if we didn’t get a firm release date within the next two months, since the only thing we know for sure at the moment is that the game is releasing on both PlayStation 4 and 5.
