The highly-anticipated new Star Wars series is rewinding the clock on the franchise, as Obi-Wan Kenobi goes back towards the prequel films.

The action-packed adventure has finally come out 45 years after the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, came out in 1977, which starred Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford in their iconic roles as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo.

The new series will see will Hayden Christensen return as Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader, a role he last played 17 years ago in the prequel films.

Star Wars fans will also be reunited with Ewan McGregor’s Jedi Master.

The legendary Jedi will return as the series goes back to between Episode III and Episode IV of the films when Obi-Wan, set ten years after the events of 2005 film Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

The moment in time is when Obi-Wan, one of the last few Jedi to survive the wipe out of all the warrior-monks, has already had his final showdown with Anakin, and now wants to look after a young Luke, before his adventures really begin.

For those who need a reminder, Revenge of the Sith took place three years after Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Anakin’s and Padmé Amidala’s forbidden marriage is discovered by Obi-Wan, when he finds out she’s pregnant, and Anakin then turns to the Dark Side to try and save her life, after a prophesy predicting her death during childbirth.

After becoming Darth Vader, Anakin plots against the Jedis and fights the epic light-saber battle against Obi-Wan.

At the end of it, and with some help from Yoda, Obi-Wan rescues Luke and Leia and separates them from safety, before going into exile with Luke.

Ewan first played Obi-Wan in the prequel trilogy, beginning in 1999 with The Phantom Menace.

The first Star Wars film (now, rather confusingly, titled Episode IV: A New Hope) featured the late Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan.

Speaking about his return, Ewan told Metro.co.uk: ‘We find Obi-Wan in a broken place. It comes a few years after Order 66, when the Jedis were all but wiped out and he’s lost his brother and his padawan to the dark side, and he feels responsible for that.

‘He’s in hiding because the Jedis are being hunted down by the Grand Inquisitor, who is trying to wipe them out, and he’s lost his faith. I thought it was interesting to take a character you know and love and put them in that sort of place and see if they can get out of it.’

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Friday May 27 on Disney Plus.
