Gentleman Jack viewers were delighted to see Anne Lister and Ann Walker kiss and makeup at the end of Sunday’s turbulent finale.
The second season of the drama, based on Anne Lister’s (Suranne Jones) famous diaries, has thrown up a whole host of difficulties for the leading lady and her other half, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle).
While Lister has struggled to make peace with her commitment to Walker, her wife has been involved in a nasty family feud, in an attempt to get what is rightfully hers.
During the latest and last episode, Walker quizzed Lister over her passionate encounter with ex-lover Marianna Lawton, (Lydia Leonard) which resulted in Walker ending their relationship.
However, after Captain Sutherland (Derek Riddell) signed over the estate, the final scene showed a poignant moment between the pair, with Lister saying: ‘We are the only people in the whole world on earth who want us to be together. It won’t be easy. It’ll never be easy. But we’re both still here aren’t we.’
Several nervous fans were under the impression that the couple wouldn’t get their happily ever after, so the final moments left many overjoyed.

One satisfied fan wrote: ‘Overall I was happy with the ending of #GentlemanJack it didn’t end on a cliffhanger and if it didn’t come back for another series I can live knowing Anne and Ann worked it out and were living a happy life.’
‘I also loved the moment of levity when anne was talking about reincarnation and ann said “i don’t think that’s how it works”, sophie delivered that PERFECTLY #GentlemanJack,’ another added.
‘That ending was exquisite… anne and ann where they belong: by each other’s sides,’ one person tweeted.
Sunday’s episode also touched on Lister’s difficulties with her own parents growing up, as it became even clearer that she saw the Northcliffes as much as family.
We were treated to a little more of her former lover and close friend Tib (Joanna Scanlan), albeit for a sad occasion, to share the news of her beloved mother’s death.
Throughout the second half of the series, Walker’s battle to secure her division of her father’s estate has come to the forefront.

We’ve seen Captain Sutherland determined to put a stop to it, which reached a new level tonight when he tried to manipulate Walker’s trusted associates, Mr Parker and Mr Gray, and told everyone that would listen of his fears of Lister’s ‘unnatural hold’ over his sister-in-law, and his belief she had been coerced.
But after trying every trick in the book to stop Walker from getting her rightful share, Elizabeth finally did the right thing. From the corner of the room, she blurted out: ’It isn’t true, neither Mr Gray nor Mr Parker had anything against this division. It’s hers and she should have it if this is what she wants.’
Gentleman Jack is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
