Killzone VR being developed by Sony claims rumour – PSVR2 release date aiming for spring 2023-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro

New rumours suggest that the PSVR2 will be out by March next year, and that Sony is working on a VR revamp of Killzone.

As exciting as it is to learn that Sony has over 20 games in development for the launch of the PlayStation VR2 the obvious question is what are they?

None of them have been confirmed and the only obvious guess at the moment is Horizon: Call Of The Mountain. However, it now seems a spin-off from another established PlayStation franchise may also be part of the line-up.

Rumours suggest that, around 2018, The Dark Pictures developers Supermassive Games were working on a Killzone VR game for Sony, but the project was taken away from them and Sony moved it in-house.

There are already rumours that Sony and Supermassive had some kind of falling out around that time, as Supermassive once claimed to be working on multiple PlayStation exclusives, but they didn’t happen and there was never a direct sequel to Until Dawn (just a couple of VR spin-offs).

Killzone VR was never officially announced but supposedly Sony was unhappy with its progress, although it’s not clear whether their problem was with the quality or simply how long it was taking.

YouTube channel PSVR without Parole claims that the project was then moved to an in-house Sony studio, although it’s not stated which particular developer took control of the game.

Assuming development continued, that makes it a prime candidate to be a PlayStation VR2 launch title – and a fairly clever way to revive a franchise that few wanted to see again as an ordinary first person shooter.

The Killzone franchise began in 2004 on the PlayStation 2 and was originally touted as PlayStation’s ‘Halo killer’. It was nowhere near good enough to deserve that description though and while famed for its graphics the gameplay and storytelling tended to be rather more generic.

Apart from the PS Vita spin-off, all the games were by Horizon Forbidden West developer Guerrilla Games, who are now working on the aforementioned Call Of The Mountain. They’re a big studio now though, at close to 400 people, so it’s not inconceivable that they could also be making Killzone VR.

The more pressing question for PlayStation VR2 is when it’ll be out, as Sony still hasn’t revealed a date and rumours suggest it’s been delayed into 2023.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the new launch date is the first quarter of the year, depending on whether enough games are ready. They suggest that around 1.5 million units will be ready by the second half of this year, which seems like it would be enough.

There’s a good chance there may be an official update on the release date this week, as Sony has a State of Play scheduled for Thursday, which will focus primarily on PlayStation VR2.
