Tonight, the Britain’s Got Talent 2022 live shows continue on ITV, as a range of talented performances compete in the latest semi-final in an effort to get through to Sunday’s final.

Monday night’s programme saw the return of the chilling Witch act, while busker Maxwell Thorpe and ventriloquist Jamie Leahey soared through to the final stage of the competition.

While many viewers tuning in find themselves transfixed by the entertaining line-up of acts, some have found themselves questioning why judge David Walliams has a different chair to his co-stars.

David, 50, has been on the show since 2012, sitting on the panel alongside Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell.

So why does the comedian and author have a different chair?

Why does David Walliams have a different chair on Britain’s Got Talent?

David actually spoke out about his chair all the way back in 2018, addressing it on social media in response to viewers who questioned his seating arrangement.

In a statement posted on Twitter, he wrote: ‘For those of you who want to know why I have different chair to the other judges on @BGT it is because I had a back operation to remove a disc after my Thames swim for @sportrelief and so need to sit on chairs that are specially designed for people with back problems.’

In 2011, the former Little Britain star raised more than £2million for Sport Relief by swimming the length of the RIver Thames, which measures at 140 miles.

He ended up suffering a painful injury as a result of the swim, hurting an intervertebral disc.

Two years later, he had to undergo emergency back surgery due to his injury.

The emergency procedure meant that David had to cancel several pre-planned commitments, with the actor saying in a statement at the time: ‘Unfortunately the operation on my back is long overdue and can’t wait a moment longer. After Tuesday, the doctors have ordered me to rest for the remainder of the year so I can recover.’

A statement on the World Of Walliams website read: ‘David Walliams is due to undergo emergency back surgery this week and has been advised by doctors to cancel all work commitments for the remainder of 2013.

‘David has suffered from a long standing back injury since he swam the Thames in aid of Sports Relief.’

Britain’s Got Talent returns tonight at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
