Tom Hanks revealed himself to be a huge supporter of BBC’s Springwatch in scenes we didn’t have on our bingo sheet for 2022.

The Hollywood legend was full of praise for the beloved series, which charts the fortunes of British wildlife during the changing of the seasons in the United Kingdom, and couldn’t resist voicing his appreciation on The One Show.

Tom dropped the compliment after the programme heard from Springwatch presenters Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan, who were teasing what animals they’re expecting to capture in their new series.

Before One Show hosts Jermaine Jenas and Emma Willis could continue with the episode, Tom interrupted: ‘Can we just say how great the BBC is?

‘You’re not going to get that live every night in the United States.’

‘That is just something else,’ he added.

Tom’s wholesome reaction quickly spread on social media, with one Twitter user writing: ‘He’s right, you know. British TV every day is some of the best in the world.’

The Forrest Gump star appeared on The One Show to promote Elvis, a biopic of Elvis Presley in which he plays Colonel Tom Parker.

Elsewhere during his appearance, he revealed that the Queen’s drink of choice is a martini, a fact he learned while sitting next to her at dinner.

The Hollywood A-lister said he had prepared in advance for his ‘chit chat’ with the monarch and had wanted to discuss things that were ‘of import but not presumptuous’.

‘The chit chat with The Queen is something that you’ve got to get ready for,’ he said.

‘I knew I was going to be sat next to her and so I wanted to be able to talk about things that were of import but not presumptuous.

‘Then out of the corner of my eye, I just saw this white-gloved hand put between me and Her Majesty this glass of water.

‘But it wasn’t in a water glass. It was a clear liquid and so I dared to ask the Queen, “and what is Your Majesty’s cocktail of choice?”, and she said, “ooh, martini!”.’

Tom continued: ‘She had the one, that’s what she nursed throughout the course of the night, and I think, well, she’s had a wonderful reign so maybe if I were to polish up my game a bit I’ll start to drink martinis.’

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
