Bradley Cooper continues to be busy at work – and busy showing off his remarkable transformation into composer Leonard Bernstein – on the set of his new movie, in which he acts, directs and produces.

The talented multi-hyphenate blew fans’ minds on Monday when photos were released by Netflix of him as the legendary conductor, composer and pianist Bernstein in the upcoming film Maestro.

As well as black-and-white photos of Bradley as Bernstein in his younger years, with actress Carey Mulligan playing his wife, Felicia Montealegre, there were also shots of the actor in staggeringly convincing prosthetics to play the composer in later life.

Now pictures of the Oscar nominee on the set of Maestro have emerged, with him pulling double duty in makeup as Bernstein while directing a scene in New York’s Central Park on Tuesday.

Clad in a vintage-style beige suit with statement pockets, a pink long-collared shirt and short maroon polka dot tie, Bradley appeared to be shooting as the music legend in late middle age, around the 1970s.

With lighter makeup, the Nightmare Alley star still sported Bernstein’s thick head of grey-white hair and a set of statement dark eyebrows.

He was seen pausing for a quick break with a bottle of water away from the action as well as undertaking an impressive lunge towards the grass in costume, as he set up the shot by peering through a large lens while masked-up colleagues looked on behind him.

Bernstein, the mind behind the music in West Side Story and On The Waterfront, as well as multiple orchestral compositions, musicals, operas and ballets, died in 1990 at the age of 72.

Actors’ transformations are always a chance for hair and makeup teams to show off their skills, with Sean Penn as President Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell in new TV drama Gaslit with Julia Roberts another look that grabbed headlines.

Bradley is leading the star-studded cast for the movie, opposite Carey, Maya Hawke and Matt Bomer.

His co-producers on the flick, which marks his return to directing following the success of 2018’s A Star Is Born remake, are Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Fred Berner, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Amy Durning.

The American Sniper actor revealed earlier this year to Variety that he was ‘obsessed’ with conducting as a child, and that Spielberg was away of his previous fascination.

‘He had this biopic idea and was talking to me about potentially acting in it. But I had just been working on A Star Is Born. And I said, “Listen, all I want to do is write and direct movies. I always felt like I could play a conductor, but may I research the material and see if I can write it and direct it? Would you let me do that?”

‘He was kind enough to hand it off to me, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the last four and a half years, and we start shooting in May.’

A release date for Maestro has not been confirmed, but is slated for 2023.
