And Just Like That writers have ensured the second season of the Sex and The City reboot will be packed with even more Che Diaz, despite the fact that fans weren’t keen on Sara Ramirez’s character.

The Grey’s Anatomy star played the nonbinary podcaster and comedian who falls in love with Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and catalyses the breakup of her marriage.

At the end of season one, Che and Miranda were off into the LA sunset together, and the upcoming series is set to continue three weeks later.

However, critics of the programme have labelled Che ‘cringy’ and ‘unhinged’, going so far as to brand them ‘the worst character on TV.’

Creator Michael Patrick King has heard the complaints it seems, but just taken it in his stride and wants more of Che in season two, rather than less.

Speaking to Variety, Michael said: ‘One of my burning passions about Season 2 is Che.’

He continued: ‘I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason – because they were blinded, out of fear or terror.

‘I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.’

Earlier this year, Michael had defended Sara’s role against the backlash from viewers, saying that criticism actually had nothing to do with Che, per se.

‘People are going to look for who’s the villain,’ he had told Variety.

‘Che is, in my estimation, honest, dangerous, sexy, funny, and warm. What everybody else is projecting on that character has a lot to do with what they want to have happen to Miranda in the story. It has so little to do with Che.’

Michael also predicted the outrage that would follow, after introducing someone that would get in between Miranda and Steve’s marriage.

‘I said in the writing room, “uh, get ready,”’ he added.

‘Because what’s coming is outrage about Miranda calling out her marriage. Whoever is in the activating of that will be an issue.’

Viewers took a dislike to Che after Miranda started reconsidering her marriage to Steve Brady, a romance which blossomed in the later series of the original show.

When Miranda told Steve that she felt ‘trapped’ in their marriage, and subsequently asked him for a divorce, many viewers were left in disbelief, with one writing on Twitter: ‘This isn’t Miranda Hobbes anymore. This is just Cynthia Nixon playing herself. And Steve deserves better than this.’

And Just Like That is available to stream on NOW.
