Sir Paul McCartney recalls fangirling over the Queen when they first met: ‘She was a babe’-Charlotte Manning-Entertainment – Metro

Sir Paul McCartney has cheekily looked back on meeting ‘good looking woman’ Her Majesty The Queen for the first time as she marks her Platinum Jubilee

The 79-year-old music legend formed The Beatles in 1960 along with bandmates George Harrison, John Lennon and Sir Ringo Starr.

The Liverpudlian group quickly rocketed to success and was responsible for the Beatlemania fan frenzy which was all the rage during the 1960s.

So it didn’t take long for Her Majesty The Queen to recognise just how much of a big deal the Fab Four were becoming worldwide.

She invited Paul and the rest of the band to Buckingham Palace in 1965, where they were all awarded with MBEs.

Now, Sir Paul has reflected on the wild experience with CBS’s Gayle King for Her Majesty The Queen: A Gayle King Special.

He recalled how he and his fellow bandmates thought Her Majesty ’was a good looking woman’ when they received the gongs.

Gayle asked Sir Paul: ‘Like a babe?’, to which he responded: ‘Yeah, just like a babe. We were preteen boys in Liverpool.

‘She looked like a film star to us.’

He went on to share how he believed he would never meet the Queen as they were still early on in their music career.

‘You see we were just working-class boys and she’s the Queen, so there’s an ocean or two between us.

‘So I never thought we would [meet her] until we became The Beatles and we got rather famous,’ Sir Paul quipped.

Sir Paul also shared the famous Royal protocols guests were briefed to with before getting to come face to face with the Queen.

‘Otherwise?’ Gayle asked. ‘Otherwise, shut up,’ he laughed.

Elsewhere, there are plenty of musical celebrations to look forward to amid the celebratory weekend, with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert taking place on Saturday night.

Queen and Adam Lambert will open the concert, followed by performances from the likes of Alicia Keys, Hans Zimmer, Ella Eyre, Craig David, Mabel, Elbow and George Ezra, who share the three-stage set-up with Duran Duran, Andrea Bocelli, Mimi Webb, Jax Jones, Celeste, Nile Rodgers, Sigala and Diversity.

The UK’s Eurovision superstar Sam Ryder, will also perform live, fresh from his success in Italy, and Sir David Attenborough and Emma Raducanu are among the famous faces set to appear.
