Simon Cowell joked with Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists Scooter Boys that he ‘might have to borrow’ one of their helmets, four months on from his most recent electric bike crash.

Presenters Ant and Dec went to Simon for his comments after the four youngsters, aged between six and 10, had performed their daring scooter tricks act during Friday’s final semi-final.

The quartet had suffered a false start to their original audition after a crash, prompting Simon to joke then that, despite them receiving four yeses from the judges, he was ‘never letting Eric my son watch this audition’.

Friday’s performance went smoothly, but Simon was still slightly stunned by the risks the Scooter Boy took.

‘The weird thing is I was out with Eric my son today and he was on one of these things, and he said, “Daddy, do I have to wear a helmet?”’ he said, before adding emphatically: ‘YES. Yes, you do! And that’s why.’

One of the Scooter Boys then piped up: ‘They’ve even got our names on it!’

Simon then replied: ‘Well, I might have to borrow one of those’, in what appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the bike smash, following the 62-year-old’s confession shortly afterwards that he hadn’t been wearing a helmet at the time.

The four also showed off their personalised shoes, prompting a ‘you’re very cool’ from the media mogul.

February’s crash left Simon with a broken arm, and he had been snapped as recently as April still wearing a wrist brace on the injured arm, having previously sported eye-catching yellow and purple casts.

His second electric bike crash in 18 months, Simon confessed shortly afterwards that he was ‘a bit of a nutter’ and told MailOnline: ‘I’m OK. I’m feeling much better thank you. It happened just round the corner.’

The accident followed a crash in August 2020 in the US, which saw him break his back and undergo six hours of surgery which involved having a metal rod inserted.

A source told the publication that The X Factor boss, who was not wearing a helmet, was ‘lucky to be alive’ and that passers-by had stopped to help him.

The 62-year-old vowed that he had ‘learnt his lesson’ after the crash, which he called ‘actually quite boring’, as he revealed son Eric gave him ‘the biggest telling off’ for not sporting the appropriate headwear.

Other acts competing for a spot in Sunday’s final included comedian Axel Blake, who received Simon’s Golden Buzzer, seven-year-old environmentalist Aneeshwar Kunchala and singer Nick Edwards.

Britain’s Got Talent returns on Sunday at 7.30pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
