Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, have launched a relief fund for victims of the Uvalde school shooting.

Last month, the country was left reeling after Salvador Ramos, 18, opened fire at Robb Elementary School, in Texas, with 19 children losing their lives.

Two teachers also died in the massacre, bringing the death toll up to 21, with many more injured.

Following the ordeal, a string of celebrities called for stricter gun control laws, with Kim Kardashian, Piers Morgan, Chris Evans and Taylor Swift among those speaking out.

Uvalde native Matthew has now started a relief fund for those in need, after the tragedy.

The How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star confirmed the news in a joint statement with Camile, unveiling the Just Keep Livin Foundation’s Uvalde Relief Fund on Thursday.

‘Matthew and Camila McConaughey have been on the ground in Uvalde for the last few days since the mass shooting, the loss is tragic,’ a statement read.

‘While the spirit of the community is in pain, the unanimous support of families to families and strangers to locals is beautiful.

‘After the initial shock, the town has now begun the funerals and the grieving process, which will continue for the surviving children, families and the entire community.

‘The community will need ongoing grief counselling and support on the long road ahead of them. Please join us to help the people of Uvalde, TX.’

The Dallas Buyers Club star paid a visit to his hometown to meet the families of the victims last week, in the wake of the atrocity, and hit out at the gun problems across the country on social media.

‘As you all are aware there was another mass shooting today, this time in my home town of Uvalde, Texas,’ Matthew tweeted. ‘Once again, we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us.

‘This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better. We must do better.’

‘Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured.

‘And to those who dropped off their loved ones today not knowing it was goodbye, no words can comprehend or heal your loss, but if prayers can provide comfort, we will keep them coming.’
