Update a vintage wardrobe

Heather’s first tip is that when older retro styles, such as 80s clothes, are trending, rather than finding your old looks from back then, you should instead buy newer and updated options

Showing an example of this, Heather shows two moto jackets – one from a few decades ago and another that she purchased recently.

The newer jacket looks quite different, but is still in a similar style and makes her look much more youthful than the vintage jacket.

Don’t hide behind your outfits

The next habit that can make you appear older is hiding behind your clothes.

As you get older you may put on a bit more weight, and develop spider veins, or stretch marks and feel as if you need to cover up a bit more than you would have done in the past.

However, Heather argues that perhaps you don’t need to do this as much as you think. Instead of wearing long high-necked dresses that completely cover your body, consider wearing a maxi dress with a lower neckline and/or a slit up the side – if you’re not sure about this you can always buy a dress with a small slit rather than one that goes all the way up your leg.

Go for style & comfort

When shopping for shoes, Heather points out that many shops now sell options that will both give support and look stylish, gone are the days of either having plain and boring shoes, or having feet covered in blisters.

Heather shows off some leopard print Croc flip-flops that offer arch support, and some kitten heels that also have some cushiony support for your feet. She also says that you’ll be able to buy flats in a huge variety of colour, and if they don’t have support you may still be able to put your inserts in for this.

Small bags will save your shoulders

Another tip from the fashionista is to do away with large bags. Your neck and shoulders will thank you for this in the long run. Heather adds that it’s important to declutter your bag and make sure you aren’t causing your body strain by carrying unnecessary items.

Replace your large handbag with a belt bag or smaller crossbody bag, you’ll feel more comfortable and look more youthful, according to Heather.

Refresh your bra collection

It’s also important to not rely on old bras and make sure you buy some new ones every so often. While old bras may feel more comfortable and worn in, Heather says “they may not be holding those girls up like the way they should be.”

Don’t be afraid of shapewear

Another habit that you may develop is avoiding, of being afraid to wear, shapewear. While there are plenty of uncomfortable shapewear out there that you may want to avoid, if you find the right one it can be life-changing, especially for formal events where you may want to look slimmer.

Change up your style season to season

Heather also suggests that instead of always buying the same kind of outfits every fashion season you should also branch out a little and go for some trending styles and vibrant colours.

Change your makeup routine as you age

Women may find a makeup look that works for them and stick with it for years, but according to Heather as you get older you should consider changing this, adding that things like dark eyes and dark lips may look good when you’re younger but you should go for lighter shades as you get older.

The summer is the perfect time of year to follow these tips and try something new, or as Heather says: “There’s no time like this season to get out of the drab and into the fab.”
