Huw Edwards unintentionally nailed the mood of UK politics on the head as he presented BBC News At Ten viewers while the hit song Mad World played in the background.

The newsreader appeared live from Downing Street just moments after it was revealed Boris Johnson survived a confidence vote and was interrupted by the Michael Andrews and Gary Jules’ cover of the Tears For Fears track while sharing updates on workers trialling a four-day working week for no loss of pay and airport chaos.

‘Thousands of British holidaymakers are still struggling to get home after half term holiday breaks after the cancellation of hundreds of flights over the weekend,’ Huw said as the music blasted on a speaker from Number 10.

‘EasyJet said it had been forced to cancel a further 37 flights today and other services from Gatwick airport have also been hit.’

Luckily, Huw then handed over to his travel correspondent for more details, and by the time he returned the music stopped.

The eerie track didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who were quick to comment on social media.

The sound of Mad World seeping from behing Huw Edwards on the 10 o’clock news is giving the impression we’re living in some kind of dystopian nightmare…

Huw Edwards going live from Downing St – having to shout the apocalyptic headlines about climate change and Ukraine – as Gary Jules ‘Mad World’ booms out from protestors’ speakers. Well, it’s peak 2022

As a journalist I feel so sorry for Huw Edwards, but as someone absolutely sick to the stomach by Boris Johnson, I tip my hat to the DJ providing very apt backing music on #BBCNews right now 😂😂

Loving #bbcnews tonight with Huw Edwards outside Downing Street with protesters pumping out top tunes in the background: “money, money, money” & “mad world” #BorisJohnsonMustResign #voteofnoconfidence

Huw Edwards presenting the news from Downing Street with Mad World by R.E.M playing in the background sums up the state of our politics 😂

‘The sound of Mad World seeping from behind Huw Edwards on the 10 o’clock news is giving the impression we’re living in some kind of dystopian nightmare…’ wrote one.

Echoing a similar sentiment, another said: ‘Huw Edwards presenting the news from Downing Street with Mad World by R.E.M playing in the background sums up the state of our politics.’

It was a funny night in the world of news as over on Sky News, a presenter became the latest person to mispronounce Jeremy Hunt’s name live on-air, calling the former health secretary ‘Jeremy C**t’ by mistake.

However, to exacerbate the situation even further, the broadcaster didn’t even realise her botch in the moment, continuing to speak to the camera after making the gaffe.
