Love Island 2022 officially kicked off on Monday night and footballer Michael Owen, whose daughter Gemma Owen is on the show, was far away from the action.

In fact, the former England ace left the country and instead travelled to Germany to commemorate the 2001 Germany v England World Cup qualifier match which saw him score a hat-trick.

Well, he did say Gemma going into the villa was his ‘worst nightmare’

Meanwhile, international dressage rider Gemma made her debut as series eight of the ITV programme got underway, and tried incredibly hard not to reveal her famous dad to her fellow islanders.

She also found herself in hot water after taking aim at Luca Bish’s surname, with viewers branding her rude.

It appears that dad Michael might have escaped the tense Love Island scenes though as he shared photos from outside the Olympic Stadium in Munich.

‘Back at the scene of the crime 21 years later!’ he penned in the caption. ‘Germany 1 – 5 England.’

While some took the opportunity to remember the historic match, Michael’s post was soon flooded with comments from viewers who posted cheeky messages about Gemma.

‘Your daughter is unbelievable,’ one penned as another wrote: ‘Your daughter is fit.’

A third quipped: ‘I’d leave the country if my daughter was on Love Island too…’

Savage.

Dad-of-four Michael previously admitted that he wasn’t keen on Gemma entering the Love Island villa and revealed he was ‘sceptical’ about it all.

Speaking to ITV News, he shared: ‘I have no doubts that she will make us all proud.

‘It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do
you’ve got to be supportive.’

The 42-year-old, who shares 16-year-old son James and daughters Gemma, Emily, 15, and 11-year-old Jessica with childhood sweetheart Louise Bonsall, knows that Gemma is a ‘sensible girl’, and said the hardest part about her being away in the villa is being away from her family.

He continued: ‘It’s been different without her in the house. I’ve got other kids and my wife and it’s been quite tough because she’s had to switch her phone off and we’ve had no contact for a couple of weeks so that’s been the hard bit.

‘I’ve heard a lot about it. I think old, grumpy men like me will always have an opinion on it because I don’t watch it and you just hear the snippets, but she assures me that it’s not as bad as I think.

‘So, we’ll give it a watch and I hope she enjoys herself.’

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
