Contrarian Direct
So there’s now more reason to hope that there will be a Nintendo Direct next week? The only reason I think there won’t be is why keep it secret? In fact, what is it with games companies and pointless secrets lately? They never keep the good ones, about new games, so why be so secretive about when your reveal event is? These things used to get announced weeks in advance when E3 was still a thing.

Anyway, I’m really hoping that Nintendo will put in an effort and talk about the new Zelda, Metroid Prime 4, and Bayonetta 3. Add in their other games that we already know about and that’s a really good line-up that could easily end up better than Microsoft’s and Sony’s.

Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, and Advance Wars (hopefully) is not only the best set of first party games in the second half of the year it’s the only one we know about for sure. This is the time for Nintendo to puff out their chest and show off. The fact that that’s the obvious thing to do, though, is what convinces me they won’t.

Fallen hope
Err… so did anyone see the new episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi this week? Not to get into spoilers but it was basically the end of Fallen Order but more boring and a lot stupider. The parallels with the game were already there in previous episodes, as others have pointed out, but this is more like an off-brand fan-made recreation and it’s kind of embarrassing.

I was enjoying The Mandalorian but now it really does seem as if the games are better than the shows and the movies (not that there are any movies anymore). I’m all for having good games, of course, but whoever’s in charge of all organising all this stuff must be asleep at the wheel.

It’s a real shame that they didn’t reveal a hole bunch of these upcoming Star Wars games at the celebration thing last month because we don’t really know what we’re looking forward to at the moment. And yet I fear I have a very good idea of what to expect from the last two episodes of Obi-Wan.

Long time coming
No Fable at Microsoft’s event is a real disappointment for me and I really hope that’s not true. It also makes me think that that developer was definitely stretching the truth when they say the game isn’t having any problems.

They’ve been making it for five years or more and they still haven’t got anything they can show? Like the other reader said, not even Nintendo is that secretive and it’s pretty obvious Microsoft isn’t hiding the game so others don’t copy it. They’re hiding it before it’s nowhere near done and/or not very good.
I hope they have a good show because it’s about time we had some good news but I have a very bad feeling about their ‘E3’ event. I just hope they have some new announcements that nobody has hinted at yet.

The lost Zeros
Reading about the 1-2-Switch sequel been putting on ice I wonder how many games Nintendo has cancelled over the years. As I understand it games get cancelled a lot at any publisher, so imagine how many Nintendo must’ve axed in their time.

I think that explains why their rumours never seem to turn out true, even when the sources were good. I expect they were true when they were first reported but then they got cancelled afterwards. I mean, they cancelled that Zelda Netflix show simply because it got leaked, maybe they do that with games as well? Maybe somewhere in Nintendo HQ there’s like five half-made F-Zero games that never made it?

Shadow of the hedgehog
From what I can make out of Sonic Frontiers I think the main inspiration is Shadow Of The Colossus not Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Maybe Zelda in terms of the visuals alone but that giant boss they showed is very Shadow Of The Colossus and there’s nothing like it any Zelda game. Also, Shadow Of The Colossus is really sombre, with a giant open world with nothing in it.

Now, I’ve no idea why Sega are copying it, since it doesn’t make any more sense than Zelda, but I’d say that’s definitely the root of the ideas. I expect later videos will show even bigger and more complicated bosses that you have to climb up. There’ll probably be a horse too, it’ll just end up being one of his new friends.

Beyond Soulsborne
I’ve just beaten Elden Ring and, I hate to be unoriginal, but it is an incredible game. Easily one of my favourite ever and certainly in my top five of the last two generations. However, while thinking back on it after my victory (I had a very long bath to muse on it) I do have to admit that technically it didn’t do anything very new, it just put familiar ideas and mechanics together in the most enjoyable way yet.

So my question is not so much what From will make next but whether it will always be something that’s like Dark Souls but with a twist. I’m kind of fine if it is but I would like to see them branch out a bit. I know there’s rumours of a new Armored Core but unless that’s radically different from the others I can’t see that being too interesting.

They did make the VR game Déraciné, which I haven’t played but seems interesting, so I’d like to see them tackle something completely, or at least mostly, different. Who wouldn’t want to see from style role-playing game, for example? Or how about another dumb action game like QTE fest Ninja Blade? They’ve grown so much as a company over the last decade or so I’d love to see what they’d do with new and old days with all their new experience.

Sport of the year
So if Nintendo has had a new sports game every year, and this year is Mario Strikers, what happens next year? I can’t believe they’d just wrap round to Mario Tennis already so what do they do? Not have one or do a sport that’s less of a good fit? I think they had a baseball one before but I’m not sure it was even released in Europe.

We’ll never get Super Mario Cricket, even though we absolutely should, what else could they do? Ice hockey sounds like it’d be too similar to Strikers and I don’t see American football being popular. Or dodgeball maybe? I say dodgeball, I still don’t really understand if that’s a real sport of just something they made up for that movie.

Fighting positive
Personally, I’m really excited to know that Street Fighter 6 is going to have a proper single-player mode. From everything we’ve seen so far it seems Capcom has learnt every lesson from Street Fighter 5, especially in terms of the bad launch and lack of content.

Their biggest problem is simply that the whole thing isn’t a surprise or nostalgic anymore. Street Fighter 4 was the big comeback and nothing else has been able to repeat that, and through no fault of its own.
With Street Fighter 6 though I like everything I’m seeing so far, including the graphics, the characters (including the leaks), and the tone not becoming too serious, which is one thing I was worried about.

Street Fighter can never be the big new thing again but I think as long as it’s a quality game with a steady stream of updates it can be a hit again. For me it is the definitive fighting game series and I’ll always be there for it.

Inbox also-rans
So if Diablo Immortal is Blizzard’s worst game what’s going to happen if it’s massively profitable? Which it probably will be. Will Blizzard take the lessen to be that they should make more bad games?
Gantz

So when Ewan McGregor was referring to the games, in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show, he wasn’t hinting at a crossover with Fallen Order, he was hinting that they were just going to rip-off the ending wholesale and hope nobody noticed?

This week’s Hot Topic
With the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase set to take place late on Sunday, this weekend’s Inbox asks you what you’re hoping to see announced, both at it and other E3-esque shows this June.

E3 may never be coming back but Microsoft, at least, is keeping to the same schedule with its big 90 minute preview event. So what games and other reveals are you hoping for? What surprises do you predict, including new hardware and service announcements, and games intended for release this year?

Sony, Nintendo, and third party publishers haven’t confirmed if they’re doing anything similar this month but if they do what do you hope from that? And what do you think is probably not going to happen?
