Martin Compston and Vicky McClure have given Line of Duty fans some hope amid rumours of a new series.

The future of the hit police corruption drama is uncertain with no concrete plans announced for season seven, but the two actors have made it clear they’d love to return for another run after a reunion photo with co-star Adrian Dunbar and writer/creator Jed Mercurio.

Appearing together on Friday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Vicky laughed: ‘Nothing’s planned as yet, we just went out for a nice meal! I’m telling the truth. Nothing planned and set in stone. We always have a long break in between series…’

Martin shared the photo with the cheeky caption ‘talking tattoo designs’, referencing the agreement Jed and the trio made last year to get AC-12 tatts if the show hit 12 million viewers.

On GMB, the actor admitted the cast and crew are delighted there’s clearly still a lot of passion with people desperate for more episodes, and he noted it comes down to Jed and his own future plans.

‘We’re chuffed that people still want us to come back. The fact that people still want to see the show is amazing,’ he added. ‘If there’s still a story to be told, I’m sure Jed will bring us back.’

Vicky – who will be opposite her Line of Duty co-star on Sunday at Soccer Aid as she coaches England while Martin plays for the rest of the world team – revealed the cast are keen to return after filming for the sixth season wasn’t quite the same.

‘We’d all go back. We adore working with each other. Jed’s writing is phenomenal, we’ve been working together for over 10 years now. The last series was incredible in terms of the response that we got,’ she said.

‘But it was really quite tough to shoot because it was in Covid. It’d be lovely to go back and not end on that kind of [note].’

Martin agreed with Vicky, although he played down the significance of the reunion photo in getting a new series commissioned by the BBC.

He added: ‘For a sociable night out – it’s not a reason to recommission a massive series. But it is such a sociable job in terms of the crew and us all hanging out.

‘I think we were the first job back over Covid. We couldn’t see each other, we couldn’t hang out at night, we couldn’t do anything. It wouldn’t be a really great way to end it. So, it’s not the way we commission a job, but…’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV. Line of Duty is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
