A terrifying thought, really (pic: Metro.co.uk)

Twitch streamer Asmongold has taken a vocal stance against gambling on the platform, and is trying to get Ted Cruz to help.

As Twitch’s gambling issues take hold of the platform more every day, with top streamers like Trainwreck and xQc taking multi-million dollar deals to play slots to their thousands of viewers, some streamers have had enough.

Asmongold has been a vocal supporter of taking gambling off of the platform, as he sees it as indoctrinating audiences into spending large amounts of their own money.

The streamer has since been in contact with Republican Ted Cruz, in hopes to use the right-winger as a tool for his own means. It’s still a work in progress, but the choice of senator might not go down well.

Ted Cruz is currently under scrutiny as he and the government have failed to combat issues with guns after the Buffalo shootings, with Cruz, in particular, failing to bring up any workable ideas about how to solve the crisis.

Meanwhile on Twitch, Stake, a gambling partner of both UFC and Watford F.C., as well as an online casino, currently has a stronghold on social media channels for advertising. Whether this is through streamers like Trainwreck or essentially buying out rapper Drake’s Instagram, Stake is everywhere.

On stream, Asmongold detailed how he’s contacted the senator due to his growing concern about how Twitch is handling the gambling:

‘It doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen, but we’ll see. I think I can get a lot of, especially religious Republican people, on board with this, by selling it as gambling.

‘Because it is. You’re effectively indoctrinating kids into gambling. I don’t know, but I really want to try and do it. I’m actually going to try to do this.’

Loot boxes and microtransactions discussion is also back on the cards at the moment, as Diablo Immortal has generated a heated debate surrounding the practice.

Belgium and Netherlands have banned the game from launching and Asmongold has proven on stream how bad they can be. A New Zealand streamer also spent over £5,000 on the game and got nothing in return.

Other studios thrive off the back of microtransactions, with gacha gaming being a hot commodity on mobile and EA’s FIFA series still raking in around a billion dollars each year from their Ultimate Team mode alone.

Whether this goes any further than Asmongold reaching out is yet to be seen, but at the moment the chances seem slim.
