BTS have announced they are going on hiatus to focus on solo projects.
It marks the first break the band members have taken in their nine years together.
The K-pop superstars announced the news during a YouTube video on Tuesday for FESTA, which is part of an annual celebration of their founding.
Members RM, Jungkook, Jin, Jimin, Suga, J-Hope and V will undertake occasional activities together before returning formally as a group.
‘We promise we will return someday,’ the band vowed.
They are understood to be beginning their extended break immediately.
Reflecting on their desire to grow individually, RM said in the video: ‘I always thought that BTS was different from other groups, but the problem with K-pop and the whole idol system is that they don’t give you time to mature.
‘You have to keep producing music and keep doing something.’
The group also shared it had been a difficult decision to make to take a break as they felt like they were letting down their fans.
‘We can’t help but think of our fans no matter what, we want to be the kind of artists that are remembered by our fans. I think now we’re starting to think about what kind of artists we each want to be remembered by our fans,’ explained Jimin.

‘I think that’s why we’re going through a rough patch right now, we’re trying to find our identity and that’s an exhausting and long process.’
In a post on WeVerse, V wrote: ‘We are happy. The things that the seven of us like, dislike, our personalities, tendencies and tempos/paces are all different but because our one thought of ARMYs [their fanbase] is the same, we had to continue Run! BTS.
‘For 10 years, we continued going forward while always looking upwards. We were scared and had to give up ourselves for the team and there were countless exhaustions and hardships that always came after the happiness within it.’

Discussing their hiatus, he continued: ‘Now is the beginning of our healthy footsteps [sic] that is an effort to stay as bangtan for a long time so I believe ARMYs will love that side of us as well.
‘ARMY and bangtan are connected by a purple string so look at us a long long time so the string doesn’t break and that the colour’s richness lasts a long time.’
‘We really love ARMYs a lot,’ he finished.
