Less than a week after director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix confirmed that a Joker sequel is in the works, it’s being reported that Lady Gaga is in discussions to join the project.

What’s more, sources are claiming the movie – titled Joker: Folie à Deux, which is a medical term relating to a mental disorder which affects two or more people – is set to be a musical.

While it’s understood that Phoenix’s involvement is not quite a done deal yet, Phillips’ announcement on Instagram, which included a picture of the front of the script and a black and white still of the actor reading it, seems to suggest it’s likely.

Now, Gaga is said to be ‘in early talks’ to take on a role in the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although the publication reports that details are tightly under wraps, it’s been suggested that the character the star will portray is that of Harley Quinn.

Quinn is known as Joker’s accomplice and on/off girlfriend, after meeting at the Arkham Asylum where she is initially his psychiatrist in the classic DC comics.

Perhaps this could be the ‘à deux’ of the title?

For fans of Margot Robbie’s popular interpretation of the character, first seen in Suicide Squad before her 2020 spin-off Birds of Prey and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, this Quinn would reportedly exist in a different DC universe than that of Robbie’s.

Director Phillips previously produced the Bradley Cooper-directed musical A Star is Born, starring Gaga, which was a remake of the 1937 original with Janet Gaynor, then in turn made into a 1954 vehicle for Judy Garland and again in 1976 for Barbra Streisand.

Cooper was also a producer on 2019’s Joker, so the connection is definitely there.

Plus, Joker nabbed two Oscars from a whopping 11 nominations – including for Phoenix’s performance – while A Star is Born netted Gaga a songwriting Academy Award as well as her first acting nomination.

The original Joker, released in October 2019, was also a huge commercial success grossing over $1billion (£821m) at the box office worldwide.

The original film followed the life of the tortured wannabe comedian Arthur Fleck, whose feelings of being downtrodden by society ultimately transform him into the infamous criminal mastermind.

Alongside Phoenix, the film’s cast also included Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Lady Gaga and Warner Bros. Pictures for comment.

A release date for Joker 2 is yet to be announced.
