Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will comprise three games in total and the next one is due out Christmas 2023.

It’s 25 years since the original release of Final Fantasy 7, on the original PlayStation, and Square Enix Is keen on celebrating it in style, with a number of announcements during a brief livestream event on Thursday night (inexplicably, at the exact same time as the Dragon’s Dogma 2 reveal).

The biggest announcement of the night (if only because the other one had already been leaked) is that the Final Fantasy 7 remake series is now confirmed as a trilogy and the next entry will be out in winter 2023 and is called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Although there was some intriguing new footage, both pre-rendered and gameplay, there was little clue as to how much it will diverge from the original story, although there certainly seems to be something different going on with the character of Aerith…

The other announcement was Crisis Core Reunion: Final Fantasy 7, what Square Enix described as a remaster of the original PSP game from 2007. It seems to be more remake than remaster though, and clearly uses the same engine and combat as Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Crisis Core is a side story focusing on Zack Fair and was by far the best of the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 games (the others, like Dirge Of Cerberus, were acknowledged at the start of the livestream though).

It seems to use the same graphics engine and gameplay as the Final Fantasy 7 remake and it will be out this winter on all formats, which is to say Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.

There’s still no sign that either Final Fantasy 7 remake game will go multiformat, but the original will be released on Steam on June 17, rather than just the Epic Games Store.

There were also brief updates on mobile games The First Soldier and Ever Crisis – an episodic retelling of the entire Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 canon.

That’s a lot of Final Fantasy 7, across a lot of games and formats, and considering how well Final Fantasy 7 Remake turned out fans should be pretty happy at the moment.
