Peta Murgatroyd has opened up about the devastating moment she suffered a miscarriage while husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy was in Ukraine.
The couple started dating in 2012 and have been married since 2017, sharing son Shai together.
In a new interview, the 35-year-old has opened up about their heartbreaking battles to add to their family, explaining that she had lost three pregnancies over the last two years.
Their most recent devastation came while Dancing With The Stars favorite Maks, 42, was away from their family home, and working in Ukraine – where he later became stranded at the beginning of the Russian war.
Peta, who also works as a professional dancer, explained that she had no idea that she was pregnant when she miscarried for a third time, which she believes was ‘better’ for her to process.
She detailed the moment she called her husband from her hospital bed, after being taken in for treatment due to a health scare at their Malibu home.

The doctor asked whether she knew that she was pregnant, with Maks mistaking the news for a happy occasion, before they both learned the truth.
‘I ultimately had no idea [I was pregnant], which in hindsight was better for my recovery because I didn’t have that super joyous moment of, “I’m pregnant again!”,’ Peta said. ‘I just had the moment of, “You lost it”.’
Speaking of the first time she miscarried, in 2020, she revealed that she felt ‘completely embarrassed and ultimately ashamed’ over her ordeal.
‘I was completely embarrassed, ultimately ashamed. I didn’t even know how to utter the words and have that sentence come out of my mouth: I had a miscarriage,’ she continued to People.
‘I’m somebody who prides herself on health wellness. I exercise every single day. But as I came to realise, that doesn’t really go hand-in-hand with the reproductive system.’
Peta sadly lost her second pregnancy just a few months later, and her partner added that he had found it difficult to ‘process’ their devastation.
‘I try to do my best in supporting Peta. I’m a changed man because of this experience,’ he added. ‘I think that if you look around, you will find that most of your friends have had issues [trying to conceive]. I realized that this is more common and this is not being talked about.’
The couple have faced a huge amount of difficulty over the last few years, with Maks stuck in Ukraine when Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded the country.
At one point, Peta wasn’t sure whether she would see her husband again, and prepared an emotional message in case something happened to him.

‘To get the phone call and to see him frantically packing his bags trying to get out of the hotel was just like, I had a heart attack nearly,’ she recalled.
‘I had to sit myself down and calm down for him. And then the next eight days [that Maks was there] were life changing. Absolutely life changing.
‘I mean, I literally wrote him a text, almost a goodbye text like if something happens.’
He arrived back in the US safely for an emotional reunion with his family, before returning to Poland to offer his help on the ground.
