George Ezra took to the John Peel Stage for a well-received secret set at Glastonbury Festival on Sunday afternoon.

The musician managed to overcome his recent ‘nasty’ bout of laryngitis well enough to go ahead with his rumoured performance, after he was forced to pull out of the Tinderbox Festival in Odense, Denmark on Friday.

The Shotgun singer, whose last major UK gig was the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert earlier this month, as well as Capital’s Summertime Ball, announced the news to fans ahead of time, sharing a photo of the John Peel Stage tent on Twitter on Sunday.

‘SURPRISE! @glastonbury see you 2pm on the John Peel Stage for a big old party,’ he wrote.

The 29-year-old certainly brought the party mood and sang as smoothly as ever in opening songs including Anyone For You (Tiger Lily) and Cassy O’.

However, he admitted his frustration with not being well enough to get to Worthy Farm sooner.

In a still huskier-than-usual speaking voice, after 48 hours’ vocal rest, he said: ‘I’ve been – and I hate to admit this – very jealous, a very jealous young man this weekend. I haven’t been able to be here.’

‘I’m sick of my friends sending me photos, videos, texts, “wish you were here” – that kind of thing,’ he added. ‘But we are here now and yeah, what a vibe!’

Treating the crowd to a set that included Listen to the Man, Barcelona and Hold My Girl, which inspired a very enthusiastic singalong section, George confessed that he didn’t want to keep his secret set at Glasto ‘too secret’, when he was invited to do one.

Fans had already done their detective work ahead of his appearance though, as rumours mounted that an act purportedly called ‘Gold Rush Kid’ was scheduled to play the John Peel Stage at 2pm.

Gold Rush Kid being the name of his new album – and what he had emblazoned on the back of his denim jacket for the set – confirmed their guesses at his loosely-held identity.

The chart-topper also reflected on being back on the John Peel Stage, eight years after releasing his debut album, Wanted on Voyage, and eight years since first playing at the festival.

George isn’t the only surprise act making an appearance today as Glastonbury has also announced that The White Stripes frontman Jack White will be performing at The Park at 6pm.

Glastonbury Festival continues at Worthy Farm, Somerset with Kendrick Lamar headlining the final day. Coverage of the music festival can be found on BBC iPlayer.
