The Umbrella Academy could be coming to an end after the fourth season, according to the showrunner.

Season three of the comedy drama launched on June 22 with all 10 episodes dropping on Netflix in one big time-bending treat.

Fans who have already binged through the latest season are aware that the show ended on a shocker, so naturally many of us are curious to know what lies ahead in series four.

Although there’s no word whether the programme has been renewed for another season, creator Steve Blackman teased where the story could go next.

‘I think inevitably if we got a Season 4, it’s going towards an endgame,’ he explained to TheWrap.

‘I think at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after Season 4. We have to be careful. My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before.’

The new season will see Elliot introduced as Viktor (Picture: Netflix)

Speaking about what changes he would make to the narrative, he continued: ‘It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that.

‘But I think if we got to Season 4, it would be a great ending for the run of the show. I’m not saying I couldn’t do more, but you know, I think that would be very satisfying for the audience, four seasons.’

When the show began, viewers were introduced to the Hargreeves family, as eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) adopted seven babies from around the world born at exactly the same time with extraordinary abilities.

Fast-forward to the present day, and the adopted siblings – Vanya/Viktor (Elliot Page), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampan), Luther (Tom Hopper) and Five (Aidan Gallagher) – are all leading completely different lives, aside from their late brother Ben (Justin H Min).

Having returned to their present, they entered their home to discover they were in an alternate timeline, when their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) created the Sparrow Academy instead with a completely different set of adopted siblings – with the exception of their brother Ben (Justin H Min), who died in their timeline when they were teenagers.

The show opens in a very strong and unexpected way, that may make some viewers think that they’ve accidentally descended into a mind-boggling fever dream.

One of the most emotional moments of the season is when it’s revealed how Viktor makes his debut, after Elliot came out as transgender in December 2020.

Elliot’s real-life transition was incorporated into the script in a seamless, thoughtful and sensitive way that will warm viewers’ hearts and undoubtedly mean a lot to plenty of people around the world who will feel represented – particularly given the new season happens to be coming out during Pride Month.

The Umbrella Academy is available to watch on Netflix.
