Ever since Anne Robinson announced she was leaving Countdown a year after becoming host, speculation has been mounting over who will take on the mantle next.

With individuals including Sir Trevor McDonald, Moira Stuart and Colin Murray (who was recently announced as a temporary stand-in) named as possible contenders to replace her, Lorraine Kelly reckons Carol Vorderman – who was on the programme for 26 years – would be the perfect candidate.

On Monday’s Lorraine, Carol was interviewed in the ITV studio alongside her Celebrity Gogglebox co-star Gyles Brandreth, when the subject of Countdown’s future was raised.

‘There’s a vacancy on Countdown. You could come back as the host! I think it would be a great thing to do. Don’t you?’ Lorraine exclaimed.

‘Well…’ Carol responded, sounding uncertain over the prospect.

The 61-year-old went on to express how ‘special’ she found her time on the game show, having worked alongside the first host, the late Richard Whiteley, for over two decades.

‘I loved my time with Richard particularly, you know. We laughed and laughed and laughed,’ she recollected.

‘Everyone who watched, we never ever said the word “viewer” – they were “Countdowners”. And it was a family, and it was a very special time and a long time. So I call that old Countdown, previous Countdown.’

Gyles then piped in to say that he believes Carol is someone ‘who likes to do new things’, just like him.

‘You’re both similar in that, you like new challenges,’ Lorraine agreed, as Carol replied: ‘I love a new challenge!’

Carol recently sparked speculation of a Countdown return when she shared a cryptic post, teasing her Instagram followers by saying: ‘On my way to work……can’t wait to tell you what it is….’

However, this turned out to be her new stint on Celebrity Gogglebox with Gyles.

Nonetheless, she did say in a social media post shared in May that it would be an ‘honour’ to return to Countdown, before adding ‘but I want to wish whoever is the lucky human to be the new host all the love and 9 letter words in the world’.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV. Countdown airs weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
