There’s a lot to unpack!

Umbrella Academy season 3 ending explained: What was Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ plan and what could post-credits scene mean?-Sabrina Barr-Entertainment – Metro

Yet again, Umbrella Academy fans are left scratching their heads, in need of answers (Picture: Netflix)

Warning: spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 3.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 took the Hargreeves siblings’ on one of their most dangerous journeys yet, as they faced yet another world-threatening apocalypse in the Netflix series.

The ending has left fans across the world scratching their heads, wondering where the show could possibly go next in a potential season 4.

In the third season, Klaus (Robert Sheehan) brought his adoptive siblings to the Hotel Obsidian, a place where they could hide away from the Sparrow Academy after landing in an alternate reality.

Viktor (Elliot Page) came out to his family as his true self, while he was reunited with the superpowered Harlan (Callum Keith Rennie), who he first met in the 1960s as a child, when he fell in love with the boy’s mother, Sissy (Marin Ireland).

Luther (Tom Hopper) ended up finding love with a Sparrow adversary, after meeting the gravity-defying Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), while Diego (David Castañeda) also had a reunion when he crossed paths with his love interest Lila (Ritu Arya) once again… and their supposed son, Stanley (Javon Walton).

Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) was devastated to discover her daughter Claire (Jordan Claire Robbins) didn’t exist in the new reality, having said goodbye to her husband Ray (Yusuf Gatewood), who she married in the 1960s.

As always, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) had a secret plan that no one else was privy to, enlisting the help of the Hargreeves and the Sparrows to try to reset the universe in an alternate dimension, known as Oblivion.

The final moments of the season revealed the aftermath of their mission… with an intriguing post-credits scene teasing an interesting journey for one particular character.

From Hotel Obsidian to Oblivion

In The Umbrella Academy season three, Hotel Obsidian is explained away as a place where anyone can stay, free of judgement or – in some cases – apprehension, where they can hide away from the world, no questions asked.

However, it turns out to have far more significance than just being any old hotel, as Reginald built the property in the early 20th century after discovering the location of a portal to another dimension above the ground in a field.

Reginald builds his hotel around this portal, with the doorway eventually being situated in the luxurious Buffalo Suite of Hotel Obsidian.

As the Hargreeves siblings discover, the door in the suite leads to an almost-identical but mirrored room in another dimension – called Oblivion.

Reginald explains that with another apocalypse imminent, seven people need to go through the tunnel into the Hotel Oblivion and ring the ‘seven bells’ protected by a lethal Guardian so that they can reset the universe.

Of course, it’s far easier said than done… but they eventually manage to source the seven spots they need to stand on, with Viktor, Diego, Lila, Sloane, Klaus, Ben and Five being the chosen people to go through with it.

Their powers charge the reset button, but Allison – who Reginald instructed not to take part so that she would survive – decides to save her siblings’ lives after realising the process was draining them.

She kills Reginald and hits the button herself, resulting in a new chain of mysterious events unfolding.

Reginald Hargreeves’ true alien identity and motive revealed

All the way back in season one of The Umbrella Academy, viewers became aware that there was more to Reginald than meets the eye after watching a flashback scene of him and his wife, Abigail (Lisa Repo Martell), a very long time ago in an unknown location, most likely another planet or dimension.

Reginald was confirmed to be an alien being to the show’s audience, with season two also revealing his interdimensional form.

However, it wasn’t until the third season that the Hargreeves siblings learnt this truth themselves, with Luther being killed by Reginald’s tentacle and Allison killing her adoptive father to reveal his green, unhuman innards.

While Luther’s original mission to the moon previously appeared to have been pointless, it turns out it was actually so that he could provide protection to Abigail’s corpse, which Reginald had preserved.

Despite being killed by Allison in Oblivion, in the final moments of season three, Reginald is revealed with Abigail in the new reality, overseeing the city that appears to have been built predominantly by him.

So, his whole motivation for resetting the universe in Oblivion, with the help of the Hargreeves siblings’ and Lila’s powers, appears to have been to resurrect his wife… which suggests that was his reason for adopting seven superpowered babies in the first place.

Klaus – and apparently Luther – are resurrected

Every season, the extent of Klaus’ powers have continued to grow, with the eccentric character discovering that he’s capable of so much more than he ever realised.

In the most recent episodes, he learns that not only can he communicate with the dead and create apparitions of them that other people in the living world can see, but he can also be resurrected himself.

This explains why he’s survived death so many times in his life – although at the time, he thought these were near-death experiences, rather than actual death experiences.

After Reginald kills Luther, the strongman ends up in the afterlife with Klaus, and then when Klaus returns to the hotel, he’s able to conjure up Luther so that he and Sloane can say goodbye to one another, having only just married.

However, when the universe is reset and a new reality is revealed, Luther appears to be alive and well… and Sloane is nowhere to be seen.

Could Luther have taken Sloane’s place?

The Hargreeves make it to another new reality

Speaking of this new reality, little is known about it so far.

It closely mirrors other realities we have seen, except that there are multiple buildings bearing the Hargreeves name, implying that Reginald is a titan in this universe with control across the city.

we know reginald has done everything for abigail and we first saw her at the end of season 1, but we still know NOTHING. season 4 help me out please #TheUmbrellaAcademy #UmbrellaAcademyS3 pic.twitter.com/QTQzfC0TCF

When the Hargreeves siblings and Lila arrive, they realise that they’re all missing their powers.

What’s more, Five has both of his arms, having had one sliced off by the Guardian in Oblivion, while Luther is no longer an ape-human hybrid, the form he’s taken since season one after a life-changing procedure conducted by Pogo.

Allison rushes home to be reunited with her daughter Claire, where she also discovers her husband Ray, while Lila and Diego head off on their own to live their lives before welcoming their baby.

Could it be that this reality is based on everyone’s greatest desires? Is it purgatory? Your guess is as good as ours.

What does post-credits scene mean?

Midway through the credits for the season three finale, a post-credits scene plays, featuring Ben.

After the season began with the scene where his mother became pregnant and gave birth to him on a train in South Korea, this scene mirrors that, with Ben riding on the same Seoul subway.

Ben looks extremely dapper, wearing a suit, jacket and glasses and reading a book.

But what could it mean? Is this the Sparrow Academy version of Ben or another iteration of the character hailing from another universe? Why is he back in South Korea?

We’re itching to find out more… and love that the (hopeful) fourth season of The Umbrella Academy could go in literally any direction. Way to keep us on our toes!

The Umbrella Academy is available to watch on Netflix.
