Journalist and activist Dame Deborah James died this week at the age of 40, following a lengthy battle with bowel cancer.

The mum-of-two -also known as Bowel Babe – launched a clothing line with InTheStyle earlier this year, going on to raise over £1million for bowel cancer charities.

Her collection included a motivational ‘rebellious hope’ t-shirt, priced at £15, with 100% of the proceeds – a minimum of £7.08 per top bought – going to her fund.

Following the devastating news of her death, Dame Deborah and her family have received an outpouring of support, including fans wanting to buy shirts in her memory and to help raise vital funds.

What does rebellious hope mean?

‘Rebellious hope’ was a phrase that became synonymous with Dame Deborah and it was something she wanted to encourage people to have right up until her last moment.

Announcing her death via her official Instagram page, Dame Deborah’s family shared some final words: ‘Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope. And finally, check your poo – it could just save your life.’

‘Rebellious hope’ is a phrase that Dame Deborah used many times while undergoing treatment for her cancer, telling The Sun back in May: ‘It’s most certainly how I’ve lived my life.

‘We all need to find the light in that rebellious hope, to keep the flame burning in our darkest hours.’

She’s also said on social media: ‘I talk about this quote a lot rebellious hope – it’s truly what has got me through the last five years.’

The writer used the phrase for motivation and positivity in her darkest moments, showing that she was determined to keep fighting the disease.

Where can you buy Dame Deborah James’ clothing line?

Dame Deborah has already raised a staggering amount for charity with her clothing, but there’s more to come, with her main collection set to launch via the InTheStyle app very soon, since the initial release was brought forwards.

In the meantime, the rebellious hope shirts are still available in white, and there’s also a navy t-shirt with the slogan written in gold leaf for £18.

You order the collection on InTheStyle’s website, safe in the knowledge that profits will be paid directly to Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK.
