Lorraine Kelly has thrown her support behind Meghan Markle’s potential future political career, saying the Duchess of Sussex could ‘make a real difference.’

Recently, Meghan has urged men to be ‘vocal’ with their anger about the repeal of Roe v Wade in the US, revealing Prince Harry’s response to the news was ‘guttural’.

The 40-year-old said the Supreme Court’s decision to roll back abortion rights tells women they ‘don’t matter, but we do’, and hopes the country will ‘band together’ and fight the ruling.

In a conversation with activist Gloria Steinem, 88, and journalist Jessica Yellin for Vogue, she also revealed she still has hope for a better future.

Speaking to royal expert Russell Myers on the ITV programme, Lorraine praised Meghan’s comments, saying: ‘This is where I really think she comes into her own, and it raises that whole speculation of whether she’s going to go into politics.’

Russell replied: ‘Absolutely. That’s been said for quite a while now, because Prince Harry and Meghan have moved over to the United States.

‘They’ve got their financial freedom, they’ve got their essential freedom from the royal family, so they can speak on political issues.’

He went on: ‘Meghan has said we might be in Washington very soon, so does she have political ambitions? I do think she does.

‘She’s certainly rubbing shoulders with the right people and making the right noises, so sometimes it might not seem so ludicrous that she might stand for office.’

Lorraine agreed: ‘I don’t think it’s ludicrous at all. I think she’s got things to say and she’s got an astonishing platform and she could make a real difference.’

Speaking to Vogue, Meghan said about the Supreme Court ruling:  ‘They may target women, but the consequences impact all of us. My husband and I talked about that a lot over the past few days. He’s a feminist too.’

She continued: ‘And his reaction last week was guttural, like mine. I know that for so many women right now, there is a sentiment of despair. But again, we have to band together and not wallow. We have to do the work.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
