Tim Allen has shared his thoughts on the recent Toy Story spin-off, Lightyear, explaining why he wasn’t that impressed by the flick.
Chris Evans took over his iconic role as Buzz Lightyear in the prequel, which saw everyone’s favorite space toy embarking on an intergalactic mission to return his friends to their home planet after their ship gets stuck in a dangerous area.
Viewers have been divided by the movie, which came nearly three decades after the beloved original hit the big screen.
Tim was asked for his opinion of Lightyear during an interview with Extra, and said that it had ‘no connection’ to the characters that he and Tom Hanks voiced (Woody).
‘The short answer is I’ve stayed out of this, because it has nothing to do [with my character],’ he said.
‘We talked about this many years ago…but the brass that did the first four movies is not this.

‘It’s a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.’
The Home Improvement actor explained that he initially thought Lightyear would be a ‘live action’ take on the franchise, with ‘real humans’ instead of an animation.
‘There’s really no Toy Story Buzz without Woody. I’m not sure what the idea…,’ he added to Extra. ‘I’m a plot guy. This was done in 1997 and it was seen to be a big adventure story. As I see it, it’s not a big adventure story.

‘It’s a wonderful story, it just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy.
‘It has no relationship to Buzz. It’s just no connection, I just wish there was a better connection.’
Chris stepped in to voice Buzz in the spin-off, but the film technically focuses on a different ‘Buzz’ than Tim voiced.

In fact, the Captain America actor played the ‘real’ intergalactic hero that inspired the toy action figure whose adventures with Woody and co were explored in the first four Toy Story films.
So, while they are both named Buzz, they are not actually the same character.
The Marvel hero admitted that he was wildly intimidated by stepping into Tim’s shoes at first, and ended up doing an impression of the OG star.

‘The first time you have to do that iconic line, “To Infinity and Beyond…,” you just do a shameless Tim Allen impression. It’s intimidating,’ he told Variety.
‘But Angus [MacLane, the director] and everyone at Pixar was so collaborative, and you kind of let them guide you.
‘Eventually you feel comfortable enough to make your own tracks in the snow and find your own interpretation, while still using Tim Allen as the blueprint.’
