Marvel just unveiled a gay Spider-Man with a ‘fearlessly femme identity’ and he’s everything.

We associate Spider-Man with his iconic red and blue suit, but now character and costume designer Krisanka has unveiled Web-Weaver from Edge of the Spider-Verse – and he’s somewhat of a fashion icon.

The illustrator spoke about the inspiration for Web-Weaver, saying a lot came from high-fashion brands McQueen and Mugler.

Web-Weaver debuts in Edge of Spider-verse 5 and is described as a ‘not-so-mild mannered fashion designer at Van Dyne [industries]’, the company owned by Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp.

Writer and editor Steve Fox helped to co-create the character and he’s bursting with excitement, writing on Twitter: ‘Surprise: I had the huge gay honour of helping to co-create Web-Weaver, who’ll make his debut in Edge of the Spider-verse this September!’

He added that he wanted to make sure that the character was unique and not just a generalisation or stereotype of the queer community.

‘Something I realised immediately when conceiving Web-Weaver is that he can’t – and shouldn’t – represent ALL gay men. No single character cant,’ he shared.

‘His fearlessly femme identity is central to who he is, but it’s not the STORY… Which you can experience for yourself in September!’

Fans have been eating up the character’s design, flocking to Twitter to express their joy at the representation.

‘A phenomenal design. Blown away,’ one person tweeted.

‘Looks very cool. Can’t wait to read the story with their debut,’ another wrote.

Others compared the lewk to a Met Gala outfit, and we can totally see the cosplay happening already.

Web-Weaver will debut alongside three other renditions of Spider-Man, including Spider-Man Noir and a Spider-Man Rex dinosaur hybrid – the possibilities are endless!

Release is scheduled for August 3, so there isn’t long to wait until we get to see the characters in all their glory.

The release follows an amazing Pride Month for the world of comics, with new inclusive characters making an appearance in both Marvel and DC.

For example, Marvel Comics announced their Pride-themed mini-series featuring Escapade, a trans superhero.

DC also continued to tell the story of Superman Jon Kent and his boyfriend, Jay Nakamura after the character came out as bisexual initially last year.
