The Sugababes have reflected on their incredible Glastonbury performance, calling their packed-out gig ‘such a celebration’ of their reunion, after the show drew in such a big crowd that the Worthy Farm field was shut down.
The Avalon stage at the Somerset festival had to be closed off after thousands more fans than expected arrived to watch Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Siobhan Donaghy perform hits including Overload and Push The Button.
The trio’s Glastonbury gig came ahead of their upcoming UK tour after more than 20 years.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast alongside her bandmates, Keisha said of their Glastonbury show: ‘They had to close the stage off, the whole area – they had to close the field.
‘And it was crazy because we were told before we went on, “There are a few more people than expected,” because we expected like 3,000.
‘And then it was like, “OK so security had been called.”‘

Siobhan said they had been told that if one of the security guards made a certain gesture they had to stop playing for safety reasons.
Keisha added: ‘It was such a celebration. They really got into it and it was amazing.’
Following their performance, the Sugababes had shared some iconic snaps from the big day, sharing their disbelief at how many people had ‘turned up to watch’.
Speaking about the reaction to their reunion, Keisha said on BBC Breakfast today: ‘It is a little bit more now than nine years ago, because we first reformed like nine years ago under the name MKS and then we won the Sugababes name back. We had had a few shows but this is (different).’
Keisha also recalled their ‘legal fight’ to reclaim the Sugababes name, as the trio, who made up the group’s original line-up between 1998 and 2001, lost the right to record and perform under the name following a number of radical line-up changes.

After briefly reforming under the moniker MKS around 2013, they regained the right to use the Sugababes name in 2019.
Keisha added: ‘We feel like we are the underdogs. We stuck together through the nine years. That’s who we are.
‘We came up with the name when we were kids. We were 11 and 12 years old and we just felt like it is actually ours. We just stuck together.’

Last week, recalling how young they were when they started, Siobhan, who joined the group aged 13 and is now 38, said: ‘There was obviously a lot of scrutiny, we were three awkward teenagers and we didn’t go to stage school or anything like that and we’re still not media trained as you can probably tell, but you’re really hard on yourself and it’s so different this time round, we’re just so much more relaxed.’

Mutya, 37, added: ‘People didn’t realise how young we were, people thought we were older!’
Keisha, also 37, recalled their time on stage, saying: ‘We were fighting for the name [Sugababes] and legally we wanted it back. It was really important for us because we came up with it when we were kids, but we stuck together and it’s who we are really and we’re just glad that we’ve got it back… and that’s why everything we do now means so much more.’
