Fallout: London – arriving a lot sooner than Fallout 5

Two key members of the mod team behind Fallout: London have been snapped up by Bethesda, although it’s unclear if they’ll work on Fallout 5.

Almost every popular Western game, especially open world and role-playing titles, has a mod scene of some sort, where fans team together to make new content and expansions, but no company encourages that activity more than Bethesda.

The extraordinary longevity of Skyrim is in large part due to it is mod scene, with the Fallout series having equally passionate and creative fans. With Fallout, the temptation is often to create an expansion in a new city, although usually it’s still one in the US, such as the ambitious Fallout: Miami.

The Fallout series rarely concerns itself with what happened to the rest of the word, after World War 3, but Fallout: London will attempt to explore just that, even though two of its top developers have been snapped up by Bethesda.

Lead writer Stephanie Zachariadis was already hired by Bethesda in August 2021 and now lead technical adviser Ryan Johnson has confirmed that he will be leaving the team to take up a full-time job at Bethesda.

On top of that, project manager Dean Carter has revealed he was also offered a job at Bethesda UK, to work on Fallout 76, but turned it down in order to make sure Fallout: London got finished.

It’s tempting to imagine that Zachariadis and Johnson were hired to work on the nascent Fallout 5, but since that wasn’t what Bethesda intended for Carter it may be that they’ll end up on Fallout 76 as well.

That’s probably in large part because no major work has begun on Fallout 5, and may well not begin for a good year or two, considering Bethesda has both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 to deliver before that.

The Fallout: London team claim the departures will not impact the mod’s release date, which is still set for 2023.

‘Ropiequet [aka Johnson] finished all of his expected level design tasks as well as a few extra ones we didn’t expect him to do,’ said a statement on Twitter.

‘The man’s professionalism and dedication will honestly and truly be missed and felt throughout the team, however it brings us hand on heart joy to know that he will be taking his amazing talents to a company we all love.’

Assuming Fallout: London isn’t delayed it may well be the next major release in the franchise, as despite rumours of a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, or even a full sequel, there’s been no official announcement and no guarantee that even if more New Vegas is on the way it’d come out an earlier than Fallout 5.
