Stars including Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Jessica Chastain have spent the Fourth of July calling out the lack of independence for women.

Today marks the date that the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, back on July 4, 1776, marking the beginning of America’s war for independence.

It is a national holiday across the country, however this year’s celebration have seen many question the lack of rights women now have over their own bodies, following the overturning of Roe v Wade – which ended the constitutional protections for those seeking an abortion.

Kim and sister Kourtney Kardashian were among those who shared an Instagram graphic from Anita Elizabeth Bitton (@Bitton), which read: ‘4th of July has been canceled due to a shortage of Independence. Sincerely, women.’

Katy made her feelings known on Twitter, penning: ‘“Baby you’re a firework” is a 10 but women in the US have fewer rights than an actual sparkler smh.’

Jessica flashed both her middle fingers at the screen in a snap on Instagram, alongside the caption: ‘Happy “Independence” Day from me and my reproductive rights.’

Jameela Jamil posted a quote on her own page, which read: ‘Independence Day, unless you have a uterus.

‘Then go f**k yourself and we don’t care if you f**king die or if we derail your entire future and mental health-day I guess? Cool…’

‘I don’t want to say the first week of July belongs to us,’ One Tree Hill star Hilarie Burton tweeted on Sunday. ‘BUT, my birthday is the 1st and @SophiaBush‘s birthday is the 8th.

I don’t want to say the first week of July belongs to us.
BUT, my birthday is the 1st and @SophiaBush ‘s birthday is the 8th. So if you’re conflicted about celebrating a national holiday, the universe is okay with you just calling it Bush/Burton week.

‘I don’t make the rules.’

Under pal Sophia Bush’s recent Instagram post on a 10-year-old rape victim who has been denied an abortion in Ohio after Roe v Wade was overturned, Hilarie added: I’m not celebrating America today. I’m fighting for America. With you sister.’

Last month, the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protections for people who wanted to have legal terminations.

Individual states will now be able to determine how they will regulate abortions, meaning that it will be illegal in certain parts of the country for women to end their pregnancies.

Protests erupted across the country, and around the world over the news, with President Joe Biden blasting the ruling as ‘un-American’ as well as ‘wrong, extreme and out of touch’.
