Katy Perry’s tweet about the lack of independence for women amid Fourth of July celebrations hasn’t gone down well with fans.

The Smile singer, 37, was among the stars who condemned the national holiday on social media following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade last month, ending the constitutional protections for those who are seeking abortions.

Taking to Twitter in the early hours of Monday morning, she penned: ‘“Baby you’re a firework” is a 10 but women in the US have fewer rights than an actual sparkler smh.’

However, this didn’t go down too well with some fans, who immediately questioned Perry’s decision to publicly endorse Rick Caruso in the election for LA Mayor – after he had previously supported anti-choice organizations and policymakers.

One called attention to her tweet on June 4, which simply read: ‘RICK CARUSO FTW!’

‘This you?,’ they asked.

‘Well, if people would stop voting for anti-choice candidates… oh,’ another replied.

A Twitter user said: ‘Remember when you tweeted about supporting an anti choice mayor?’

‘Did you mean to time this up to be exactly one month after this tweet where you endorse an anti-abortion candidate,’ a follower commented.

‘Girl you endorsed Rick Caruso maybe sit this one out,’ a fan suggested.

RICK CARUSO FTW ❗️

As one added: ‘You supported an anti-abortion mayoral candidate in the last 30 days.’

It has been reported that billionaire Caruso – who is up against Karen Bass in an election to become LA mayor in November – has offered financial support to anti-abortion politicians in the past, something that he has been condemned for.

Following the initial leak that led to Roe v Wade being overturned, the businessman vowed to ‘vigorously protect a woman’s right to choose’, and declared that he is ‘pro-choice’.

‘As your mayor, I will vigorously protect a woman’s right to choose,’ he tweeted in May. ‘Reproductive freedom is a basic human right and any threat to this freedom endangers all women, especially the most vulnerable in our society. #CarusoCan.’

In a further statement, he added: ‘The draft decision made public last night made it clear that we need to take every step available to ensure that women’s reproductive rights are respected and protected.

‘I will be forming a California PAC for choice and providing initial support of $100,000 and pledging $1million to ensure the amendment passage.

‘As a father who is pro choice, I am proud to live in a city and state where women’s rights are protected.’

In an open letter published on the same day, Planned Parenthood’s executive director, Celinda Vazquez, questioned Caruso’s previous actions.

‘As voters and potential constituents, we have been deeply disturbed to observe your long-standing support of anti-choice individuals and organizations. Throughout your career, you’ve publicly supported organizations and policymakers who have taken aggressive action to limit access to abortion, overturn Roe v. Wade, and defund Planned Parenthood,’ the post read.

‘You’ve donated nearly $1million to policymakers who put forth legislation that criminalized abortion. We write to you today to gain clarity about your position on reproductive rights, and with the expectation that you will right these wrongs.

‘You’ve financially supported many candidates who put forth legislation to defund public health clinics that provide reproductive services, including Planned Parenthood. These candidates include Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas, and Congressman Joe Heck of Nevada.

‘The list goes on. You have supported some of the strongest enemies to reproductive rights in the country. You have used your wealth and influence to support policymakers who likened abortion to murder, and who have made concerted efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and overturn Roe v. Wade.

‘You now claim that you have had a change of heart, but that is not enough. Voters need a clear picture of where you stand on reproductive rights and a better understanding of why you supported such harmful policies and lawmakers in the past.’
