Former Love Island contestant Sharon Gaffka is eyeing up Miss Universe as she looks to qualify and represent Great Britain in the competition.

Appearing on Lorraine on Tuesday, the 26-year-old revealed her ambitions as the host congratulated her on the move.

The former civil servant, who has taken part in pageants previously, was keen to dispel some of the myths that surround beauty competitions as she explained her decision.

‘I think this will be Miss Universe’s 72nd year,’ she said. ‘So it has been going for a long time, and I think a lot of people have this really weird misconception about what pageants used to be like, versus what they are now.’

‘I really support Miss Universe’s mission to support international female organisers and charities,’ she added.

Sharon was also keen to highlight the pageant’s inclusivity, explaining: ‘Also, with Miss Universe, people don’t realise that they also allow trans contestants – they’re very forward thinking.’

Emphasising that she ‘very much supports the move’, Sharon revealed that there had only been one trans contestant so far.

Presenter Lorraine Kelly asked about Sharon’s thoughts on pageants’ emphasis on ‘what you look like, and what your body’s like’ as well as personality, which the TV star defended with her feelings that it was about ‘other qualities’ too.

Saying that ‘everybody’s beautiful in their own different way’, she added: ‘I can probably sit there and say there were girls on that stage when I won Miss International UK that had better bodies than me, that might have looked better than me, but there’s other qualities. It’s about the package and the final show, and the evening dress is just the bow on top of the present, essentially.’

Sharon was crowned Miss International UK in 2018 and has been taking part on the circuit for almost a decade.

Having even had the same pageant director as fellow Islander Molly-Mae Hague at one time, Sharon has previously said that pageants ‘are for a group of misfits to be misfits together’.

In a 2019 social media post she also wrote: ‘It is literally a place where everyone accepts all kinds of crazy and teaches you to love your ‘flaws’.’

While discussing her anti-spiking campaign and future political ambitions, Sharon teased that we could see her back in Westminster sooner rather than later.

Responding to Lorraine’s question over if and when she might run as an MP, Sharon replied: ‘Maybe it depends when the next general election is – we could see it at the next one.’

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
