Love Island’s Mollie Salmon has got herself into hot water after calling allergies a turn-off, prompting her family to issue an apology on her behalf.

The 23-year-old made the comments during ITV2’s spin-off show Love Island: Aftersun on Sunday night’s episode, which saw the newest contestants to arrive in Majorca discuss their dating preferences.

Asked what would put her off a potential love match, the make-up artist from Southampton said: ‘I actually dated a boy with loads of allergies. When you go to a restaurant and you can’t eat anything on the menu, and it’s really frustrating.’

Charity Allergy UK led the online backlash after Mollie’s remarks, saying they were ‘disappointed’ with the islander’s words about people with allergies.

A statement from the organisation on Twitter read: ‘It highlights why we need better awareness around the reality of living with allergies. We urge speaking up about allergies yet such attitudes make it harder to do so.’

Mollie’s family seemed to be equally disappointed, and swiftly published an apology on the contestant’s Instagram Stories.

‘On behalf of Mollie we’d like to apologise for any upset caused by the allergy comment made. This was not said with any bad intentions and wasn’t said to purposely be offensive or upset anyone. Mollie herself suffers from an allergy to seafood! Thank you for the continued love and support,’ the post read.

Mollie was one of six new girls to have joined the ITV dating reality show, alongside five new boys, including Ronan Keating’s son Jack.

The contestant has already potentially caught the eye of another islander, fishmonger Luca Bish, who is currently coupled up with footballing legend Michael Owen’s daughter, Gemma.

After chatting about fish – whatever floats your boat – chat soon turned towards Luca’s fledgling romance with 19-year-old Gemma.

‘So are you quite open still, or semi-closed?’ Mollie quizzed.

But Luca admitted he’s not completely closed off, telling her: ‘I’m semi-closed, yeah. But you just don’t know what’s happening over there…

‘Listen, if someone were to come in here. It would take something special, and you don’t know.’

Could Mollie tempt Luca away from Gemma, or could another islander capture her heart in the days to come?

Love Island continues tonight 9pm on ITV2.
