Warning: major spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4 volume 2.
One particular character’s death in Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 has left fans devastated, so much so that thousands have signed a growing petition calling for a return in season 5.
In the season finale of the epic show on, which dropped on Netflix on Friday, fan-favourite Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) goes down like a hero in the Upside Down after creating an electrifying, guitar-shredding distraction to the tune of Metallica lead the vicious demobats away from the Creel house.
He initially manages to race away from the flock of creatures and use his weapons to defend himself, before eventually being brought down by the beasts, dying in the arms of Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo).
While his death seemed finite, hordes of fans are not happy with how his story arc ended, particularly as he only just made his debut in the first volume of season four.
A petition has been set up on Change.org by a fan, which at the time of writing, had already garnered over 19,000 signatures with a target of 25,000.

The person who created the petition, who’s going by the name Maddy, wrote in summary: ‘This is a petition I have started to bring back fan favourite Eddie Munson.
‘The Duffer Brothers have unfairly killed him off and many other fans and I think he deserves to be brought back and not just as a flashback, please sign this petition to spread awareness.’
The description added: ‘Stranger Things fans are kindly asking Netflix and the Duffer Brothers to bring back the fan favourite character Eddie Munson.’

Several people who’ve signed the petition have voiced their support in the comments, with one stressing that Eddie deserves to graduate from high school.
Another said that viewers are reportedly ‘giving Stranger Things a bad rating’ and ‘cancelling their subscriptions’ from Netflix as a result of Eddie’s death.
‘His death didn’t seem to have any meaning beyond shock value and it sucks to have such a good character thrown away like that,’ someone else wrote.
‘I want more backstory on Eddie and I need his name to be cleared and I need him to graduate.’
Joseph recently opened up about Eddie’s tragic fate, revealing he had ‘no idea’ that the character would die.

‘I knew that I wasn’t optioned. I had a feeling that we would finish his arc this season. I couldn’t have imagined the manner in which he would leave, but yeah, I think it’s a weird thing. It’s kind of bittersweet,’ he told Esquire.
‘I would love to go back to that set and to see those people again. But sometimes there’s a beautiful arc that they’ve written and he’s such an empathetically written role and they’re very rare, these kind of roles. It feels a little bit like a lottery ticket and I feel incredibly grateful, but it’s a shame not to be able to come back. Onwards.’
In the season finale, it was revealed that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was able to resurrect Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), although her friend is now in a comatose state after her latest encounter with Vecna.
Considering Eleven’s newfound powers to add to her already-established superhuman abilities, Joseph was asked if he reckons Eddie could return.
Remarking that it ‘feels a little convenient’, he added that he’s ‘as clueless as the rest of us’ – before saying he’d be ‘up for coming back’.
‘But it feels like his story’s been told, slightly, to me,’ he added.
Stranger Things is available to watch on Netflix.
