As fans remain divided on the Last Of Us remake, one of the game’s animators has refuted criticism of it being a mere cash grab.

Even if its announcement hadn’t been leaked prior, capping off the Summer Game Fest presentation with the remake of The Last Of Us would have elicited the same level of apathy from a sizable chunk of the audience.

Officially titled The Last Of Us Part 1, there are two major points of contention people have with the remake. The first is that it’s being sold at £70 (the PlayStation 4 remaster is still easily available at only £15) and the second is that the original game isn’t even 10 years old yet, and still looks great.

As a result there have been many accusations that this remake is nothing more than a cash grab, something which a developer on the game has taken umbrage with.

Robert Morrison, who was a cinematic animator for the remake at PlayStation Studios Visual Arts, issued a defence of the remake on his personal Twitter, saying ‘Actually it’s the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career. The highest level of care and attention to detail possible.’

He briefly touches on the game’s price tag as well, saying that it’s ultimately up to the individual whether they think it’s worth it.

‘The price of the game is out of my control and worth is subjective to each individual. You can decide for yourself if you want it or not,’ he says. ‘All I’m saying is I am in awe of the work that an amazing group of people did on the project. A tremendous amount of passion was put into it.’

Morrison has been working as an animator within the games industry since the late 90s, with credits including Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 and the 2018 God Of War.

He wrapped up working on the Last Of Us remake in June and is now a senior animator at Sony Bend, where he’s no doubt lending his skills to the studio’s next project.

Unsurprisingly, the replies are split. Many have expressed gratitude to Morrison’s statement and are openly excited to experience the game with PlayStation 5 level visuals.

The Last of Us Part I is a day one for me, Robert. Can’t wait to play this story again.

Stoked to play this again but re-experience it in with the backing of modern technology

On the flip side, others refuse to let go its £70 price tag, arguing that people are just paying for the exact same game they can get cheaper on PlayStation 4, just with better graphics.

In fact, the remake will lack the original game’s multiplayer, meaning it offers less content.

That doesn’t not Mahe it a cash grab. It’s all a remake and shouldn’t be full priced.

still whack its 70 dollars when its missing multiplayer so its actually shipping with less content then was on the original game that sold for 60 dollars. Sony needs to stop with 70 dollar games, it’s simply too much

Some fans have clarified that they’re not saying a lot of work isn’t being put into the game, and that their issues mainly stem from Sony greenlighting the project in the first place.

Many take issue not so much from the game being a ‘cash grab’ but simply the fact that it seems so unnecessary and a waste of Naughty Dog’s time. The remake was reportedly contracted to another developer, before Naughty Dog took over the project.

No doubt the primary reason for the remake’s existence is as a promotion for the Last Of Us TV show coming out next year, which is likely to introduce many people to the franchise for the first time.

Naughty Dog’s next wholly original project, a multiplayer Last Of Us spin-off, is still in development, but so far only a single piece of concept art has been shown of the game and studio co-president Neil Druckmann has said we won’t see more of it until 2023.

Many fans are frustrated that it is also not a typical release from Naughty Dog, with still no indication of what the developer’s next major project will be after that.

The Last Of Us Part 1 releases for PlayStation 5 on September 2.
