Sam Taylor-Johnson has shared her joy as she has been confirmed to direct Amy Winehouse’s upcoming biopic.

The director, who was responsible for the first instalment of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, took to Instagram to confirm reports she had signed up to direct the upcoming film about the late singer.

Sharing a report of her joining the upcoming Back To Black biopic, Sam told her followers: ‘This is a dream movie to helm. I’m ready, let’s go… #amywinehouse #backtoblack’.

The upcoming biopic, which is named after Winehouse’s second and final studio album, has received full support from the late star’s estate.

The screenplay will be written by Matt Greenhalgh with Studiocanal producing with Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, alongside Tracey Seaward, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While the storyline has yet to be confirmed, the biopic is expected to follow Winehouse from her humble beginnings trying to make it as a jazz singer in North London to being a multiple Grammy-award winning superstar.

Winehouse tragically died in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning after being found unresponsive at her home in Camden, London.

The search is also reportedly on to find the perfect actress to play the lead role, with her parents, Janis and Mitch Winehouse being heavily involved in the casting process and overseeing the movie.

They have also given their permission for the iconic singer’s music to be used in the film, too.

Since her death over a decade ago, there have been multiple attempts to create a feature film about Winehouse’s life which have yet to come to fruition.

The 2015 documentary Amy, directed by Asif Kapadia, earned an Oscar for best documentary but was heavily criticised by the singer’s family.

Winehouse’s parents later released the documentary Reclaiming Amy in 2021, marking 10 years since her death, with her mother telling the BBC at the time: ‘I don’t feel the world knew the true Amy, the one I brought up.

‘I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy.’
